CTX 3030 set up for competition hunts.

As with most things in life, it's between your ears. Brain farts happen. One day I spent 3 hours relic hunting and wondering why I'm not finding anything. Nothing was notched out, I was just ignoring ferrous signals out of habit… Well, that was embarrassing for sure.

Considering a Legend and wanting some feed back from those that have used them

The fact that you continually refuse to name that dealer suggests that it's one of the forum's sponsors.

How much junk are you willing to dig to find gold ????

On some hunts I use quarters as an indicator. For example, if a virgin site (yes, they still exist!) has been polluted by pulltabs over many generations, digging every one of them will let me cover maybe 50 square feet per hour… not fun. So if I'm limited on time, I tonebreak or discriminate...

No, I like hearing that growl in the background (I usually keep ferrous volume low, although slightly higher than default). Just like with threshold, if it suddenly changes or disappears, you may want to investigate why. It's been 100+ for a while here too, but I just carry ice tea in Yeti...

Considering a Legend and wanting some feed back from those that have used them

I am an old timer, but I hunt by ear. If my screen ever breaks, I probably won't even notice for a long while  Always either in full tones (60 in case of the Legend) or pitch, depending on what I'm doing. Pretty much always in all metal (the only exceptions so far were cases where I was...

Considering a Legend and wanting some feed back from those that have used them

Some old timers who hunt by screen can't get used to 0-60 VDI scale.

Minelab F-3 - designed for detecting land mines

No ID or discrimination is survivable in cases when you're just digging everything (for example, at the beach, or in some relic dumps). But operating on 1.25 KHz means it will be absolutely blind to small(ish) gold. You'll have a better luck finding gold with a $50 Harbor Freight detector.

    SMF

If you're limited on time and don't know the place very well, looking for trash and coin spills will help you find more jewelry. Example 1. Hunted out lake beach. Not a chance for a deep find, only fresh drops. If foot and towel prints are hard or impossible to read, trash spills are your best...

Like many things in life, it boils down to time. If it's a virgin tot and I have enough time, I'll be gridding, not just overlapping. But if I've to cover many acres of hunted out beach in 2-3 hours, for example, I certainly will be, um, speedrunning. And looking for trash patterns. Watzit, a...

    11” coil bs 6” coil

Yes, lower frequencies usually go deeper, but higher frequencies see smaller objects. Latter is not always a good thing… For example, on many virgin tot lots there's so much tiny bits of foil that you won't be able to find anything meaningful unless you switch to lower frequency (which will be...

    SMF

I pretty much never care about "covering as much ground as possible" on unfamiliar site. If I'm sweeping aimlessly, I'm looking for trash. At this stage, I don't care at all about overlapping, as humans tend to litter in dense clusters. Once I found such cluster, I check out the nature of that...

    SMF

Think of it this way: when you're using a regular overlapping pattern, you detect pretty much all shallower targets up to 1/2-2/3 of the maximum depth. In most cases that's more than enough. However, if you find a (usually small) spot of extreme interest and it has a potential for very deep...

    11” coil bs 6” coil

Depends on how small you want to go. For thin gold chains at the beach I'd prefer 40 KHz, unless there's a strong EMI on this frequency. Tiny gold jewelry on tot lots and event fields? M2, as it gives you the benefit of IF adjustments.
