Should I have been using the "shooter" coil? :detecting:

To my surprise I had some time to get out yesterday on the nicest day of the year so far. I was hunting an extended yard from a house that sits on the ridge where the first days battle of Gettysburg took place. Got a BEAUTIFUL deep signal......of course it couldn't be a buckle, but still a...

    super 12 coil opinion

Seriously?? You starting a collection? Your ground may be better down there John. If you want it, its yours! :detecting: I was a bit surprised with the ground readings that I got today. My yard reads on average 2.5%. The ground I was hunting today was reading 30% at the same gain setting. I...

    super 12 coil opinion

My new V rated super 12 coil showed up yesterday, purchased a lower rod for it and tried it out today. I hunted farm field for probably 4 hrs, lawn for probably 2. Played around with it in my yard comparing the D2 and the S12 for probably 1/2 an hour. All in all I have to say that the extra...

    Holy Frijoles! bad ground

Good stuff!! Were you using the V or did you jump over to a pulse unit? Just out of curiosity, if you were using the V, were you still using the settings we've found to be best down there or did you change it up a little?

    Holy Frijoles! bad ground

Well, that 12 will work well around here but is a big no no in that ground in VA. Thats too big AND concentric instead of double d. Looking forward to getting it though. :detecting:

    Holy Frijoles! bad ground

Simple fact is that if I had used a smaller coil with less depth I would have gotten no finds. End of story. It matters not if the coil excels beyond belief in any kind of ground if the targets are twice as deep as the limits of that coil.

    Question about single frequency searching

Now thats some interesting information.

Why Single Frequency? & Why Accept Negative Numbers?

In some of my air testing using all metal, mixed mode and discrimination settings, I have found that in MM I can get a viable vdi number an inch or so before the detector will give an audible discrimination beep. With this in mind, in theory, MM could potentially provide a good number slightly...

Why Single Frequency? & Why Accept Negative Numbers?

Indeed! The guys that did the best down there had high end pulse inductions machines. I won't be using one as my wife says I cannot spend 5 grand on a detector. Spoil sport!

Why Single Frequency? & Why Accept Negative Numbers?

It is, I did pick up quickly on the double beep and a few other strange sounds. Wish I could have hunted the 3rd day, I was getting used to it but the snowstorm got the better of me! lol

Why Single Frequency? & Why Accept Negative Numbers?

When at the hunt last week I had accepted down to -30 using mixed mode. Interestingly, I either got positive numbers from about +10 up (very few) or just an all metal signal. Nothing came in between -30 to +10. Though I realize the ground was bad, I would have figured that the non ferrous...

    super 12 on its way

Just got an unused super 12 coil off ebay for 143.00 shipped. Hope it does as expected with my ground. :detecting:

Why Single Frequency? & Why Accept Negative Numbers?

If I'm thinking right, audio discrimination off is the same as accepting all VDI numbers, you'll get a beep for everything. Mixed mode or all metal gives you something similiar to the pinpoint audio for non accepted numbers and a beep for accepted numbers.

    Question about single frequency searching

I know for a fact when testing in my test garden (a penny buried at 10") that single frequency hits better than all three together with similar gain and sensitivity settings. And, on top of that, 7.5 hits best out of the three when running single freqs. presumably because 7.5 hits copper better.
