super 12 coil opinion

My new V rated super 12 coil showed up yesterday, purchased a lower rod for it and tried it out today. I hunted farm field for probably 4 hrs, lawn for probably 2. Played around with it in my yard comparing the D2 and the S12 for probably 1/2 an hour. All in all I have to say that the extra weight is not worth the money when compared to the D2. It does run quieter but that is about the only benefit I can see. I got no more than an inch extra depth TOPS. In my testing in my yard, that inch only meant the difference between a VDI that jumped around a little to a slightly more solid reading. Beyond that and neither coil picked up my target. So, I guess if I am beach hunting the 12" concentric may be beneficial but for spending several hours in a field or woods, I'll be sticking with my D2. Of course, this is for MY STYLE HUNTING AND MY GROUND. Others may have completely different results and needs.

If anybody would like a once used super 12 with a rod and bolt...let me know. $150 plus shipping. I'll put the money toward my TDI I will be buying for really bad ground.
Thanks,
Derek

Your ground must be fairly mineralized. I have what I consider highly mineralized ground and a DD/SEF actually goes deeper than the 12" here.

I sold my 12 as I said earlier. My ground and results are as Larry said. I bought a used 10x12 SEF but haven't tried it yet.

Seriously?? You starting a collection? Your ground may be better down there John. If you want it, its yours! :detecting:

I was a bit surprised with the ground readings that I got today. My yard reads on average 2.5%. The ground I was hunting today was reading 30% at the same gain setting. I tried the ole' bury a quarter test (yes I know freshly buried objects wont' read the same was whats been in the ground 20+ years) and found that in my yard I can read a freshly buried quarter at 12" with NO problem, but in the ground I was in down in the lowlands, I couldn't pick it up at 6". I now realize why the majority of my finds around Gettysburg have been less than 5" with a rare occasional find at up to 10" One would think I'd have picked up on that a bit sooner, but hey, I never new the ground was like that here until I learned to use the ground probe. Live and learn! I'm going to be purchasing a TDI and go over all the ground I think I have cleared out.

A lot of people overlook another great benefit of the Super 12. You cover an extra 2 inches of ground with each sweep. This comes in handy at the beach or in a field.

As far as the price....White's has the spring sale going on...$149 with a coupon. You may be stuck with it for a while, so give it more time!

I closed this thread, buy and sell belongs on the classifieds.
