Some kids metal detect. Many people don't even consider there may be underground objects, power lines, that could seriously injure you. I know a lot of places run electric line on their own property, and it may not be very deep. Stumble into a property like that, and see what happens when your shovel cuts a line.

You could hit a low power data line, and cause damage to a company. People need to realize, you never know what's under the dirt.

Be Nice!

In over 30 years ive never hit a single utility line while metal detecting.when i get a signal i check it from all angles.......if it were a metal utility line i could quite easily identify it so i wouldn't dig.Plastic water mains pipes are extremely tough and would take more than a hit with a small metal detecting spade to pierce, likewise with old ceramic sewer pipes. My advice to you is stop using a JCB to dig up your finds and you will have no worries.☺
Or if you are so concerned why not set up something like the NCMD we have over here where people can pay a small yearly membership and be fully insured up to £10,000,000.for public liability.
Try to enjoy life and stop putting doom and gloom phrophecies on a forum where people come to escape the crap we are being continually fed,if we want that we can read some Nostradamus.😊

If you cut a Fuel oil line going to a house, and EPA mandates it's hazardous and needs cleaned up.

Building a deck? Planting a tree? Installing a mailbox? Then 811 is the number you should call. Every digging job requires a call – even small projects like planting trees or shrubs. If you hit an underground utility line while digging, you can harm yourself or those around you, disrupt service to an entire neighborhood and potentially be responsible for fines and repair costs.

Many states have a CALL BEFORE YoU Dig law.....

Some penalties are.....
civil penalty up to a maximum of ten thousand dollars ($10,000.00) in Indiana
California State Law Says, You Must Contact DigAlert Before You Dig! Failure to do so can result in fines up to fifty thousand dollars

some states say you must call for anything over 12" deep, others don't stipulate a depth.
We have no underground lines on my street lol You remind me of Steve Canada lol
