1 Hour Recon at Boarded Up Old House Nets Relic and Drop of Silver (again...)

Erik in NJ

New member
I've had my eye on this older house in town that's been boarded up and gave it a short trial tonight. Second signal was the 46S Rosie - just a drop of silver, but S mint marks are not that common around here. Pulled about 4 Wheaties from the 40's to the 50's so maybe this homestead is not that old - I don't know. Soil is like sugar sand - really soft so maybe the good stuff is quite deep. Also found this cool old looking relic - it looks quite a bit older than the dates off the coins.....any ideas what it is/was? It's solid and has some heft to it. There were more iffy signals there, but I didn't have time to dig 'em - might head back this weekend.

Thanks for looking.

If I had a quarter for every piece similar to that, I wouldn't be a rich man but I bet I could buy my wife & myself a really nice dinner.

Stuff like that seems to go with old house sites.

Hi Eric......nice item. I have some early 1800's furniture and this reminds me of the draw handles on one chest of draws.

The draws are beefy, heavy wood, and when filled with items they take some force to open them. Hence they can over a couple of hundred years, succumb to the strain.

I'll bet that beauty could tell a few tales, if only it could talk. Such artifacts have so much more appeal to me than run-of-the-mill coins.....Matt

Hi Matt,

Thanks for your post - I appreciate the info and yes, I too noticed the bent pin on one side last night after I made the post. I'm not sure if it's brass or copper....how do you tell? Regarding polishing it up, I'm considering putting it in my vibratory tumbler with some crushed walnut shells. I've used this technique to bring rusted bolts back to a polished finish. I just have to locate the additive that I used to us. Any tips on polishing it? BTW, where are you located Matt, in the UK? I used to know when we were posting a few years back, but I don't recall.....you can send me a PM if you don't want to advertise.....Best, Erik
