10.5 DD 18.75 erratic behaviour

Hi everyone,
Having problem with my 10.5" DD 18.75 coil. I can;t get it to stop falling. I've tried several different locations with no luck. I auto and manual ground balance along with noise cancel. Sensitivity above 15 becomes erratic. I cleaned both coil and cover and made sure the cord is wrapped tight around stem. My 6" DD 18.75 is rock solid. My stock 9" 7.5 khz coil works good as well. Sensitivity almost to max.

Thanks for any help.... Jerry

If your other coils work o k then the 10.5 has gone bad, send it back to Minelab

and have it replaced.

Yep, sounds like something went wrong. I run my sensitivity at 30 when using the 10.5" HF most of the time. Keep in mind that the coil is not waterproof but I've had it in some pretty wet situations. Not sure if there is a possibility that you used it in a very damp environment and maybe it's not sealed exactly right. Just a thought.

I also try and make sure that I do not wrap my cables too tightly just to keep from damaging them near the connectors.

Let us know what you find out.

I hunted a place that had a eletric fenceclose by that all my coils did okay, but my 10.5 dd would go crazy . And I was a long wyas away from the fence.

I was wondering the same thing too ... electric power lines, electric fence, or buried dog fence nearby?? Although after trying several locations, I'd say probably a bad coil too.

I have not submersed this coil so water is not the problem. I want to send it back as it was purchased 5 weeks ago from Kellico. I did seal the seams and connector with goop to keep it water tight so I don't think they will replace the coil.

Thanks for all your advice !!!

Minelab has replaced two of my 10 1/2 inch coils. The insides came loose and would slide back and forth inside of the coil housing. One of the coils took out the main circuit board of the detector also. Minelab replaced everything with no charge.

Hi Steve,
The only problem they my have is I marine gooped all seems and where coil and cord meet. Do U think they will still replace?
What address did U send your coil to?

Thanks Jerry

There isn't some kind of metal particles in the goop is there, possibly causing it to false?? Like Les asked - did it work okay prior to gooping? If so, it's probably the goop. If not, probably bad coil.

Call Minelab and talk to them. I am sure they will work with you. There are places where I have a heck of a time with that coil and in other places it runs good. Some of that for me is Sensitivity and trash. There are places that I can run it 22 to 28 Sens and it runs well in the trash I have turn it down.

You should give Minelab a call and ask them about the sealer and if it would affect the warranty. Call Minelab USA.

My 3 kHz coil did the same thing. I sent it back. They replaced mine. It was still under warranty. Good luck.

I'm going to try to remove the marine goop from coil. I think it's going to take some time to get it all off. If anyone has an easy way to remove it let me know. This stuff adheres real well unfortunately.

Thanks for all your advice ....... Jerry
