1000th coin

fired up my very first detector (my Ace25+0) on March 4 this year. The ground was still mostly frozen adn there was still snow on most of the yard. found a sunny spot where the ground had thawed and went at it. tonight I dug up coin number 1000 - a 1928 wheatie. I knew I was six coins short of my goal so It was a fairly short hunt at what used to be a school. ended up with only 8 coins for the day, but it passed the magic number. I know that a lot of you guys (and gals) have colleced several thousand in your career, but all of you felt a special thrill when you realized that you had passed that first thousand.

Ok, next goal: I have yet to find an IH penny.

:usaflag:A thousand coins in 3-1/2 months? Do you work or do you just go detecting every day? Sheeesh!!

actually, McDave, I'm semi retired until about a month ago I started working part time at a nursing home. Until then, yeah, I was out a LOT. Even with the job though I'm out for at least an hour every day (weather permitting). My brother in law says I'm obsessed, but then again, he's a golfer so what does he know?! Hey wait - he's right.

I kinda cheated a litllte. I hit the tot lots at every school and park in every small town for 20 miles around. Since I've never seen anyone else with a detector in the area, it was like shooting fish in a barrell. (I found 97 coins in one school playground).

I've never found a Merc.

:usaflag:Ok...well I suppose I would be out a lot more if I had more time. I found a '27 Peace dollar about two weeks into it..lucky.

Dang, that's a pretty coin. I've never found one yet. found an Eisenhower dollar a couple of weeks ago but that's the only dollr coin I've found. I said before that the US needs to do away with the one dollar bill and force peole to accept coins. If noone carries them they can't lose them and if they don't lose them, I can't find them. I'm jealous of the Canadians where they are common.

:usaflag:In this country they need to do away with the penny. The amount that is buried in the ground is staggering..and quite annoying. It may be too late for us but not for future generations of metal detectorists.

A million years ago when I started I set the goal of finding 1000 coins in one year. I was finding 20 or 25 coins a hunt and the number seemed possible. One day things clicked and I had a 100 coin day. A few days after that a 200 coin day. I had two weeks last spring where I managed 2000 coins in fourteen days. That wasn't easy just because it takes a lot of detecting, and you need really good sites that are loaded with coins. I suspect your production will be increasing dramatically very soon. Good luck and congratulations on hitting a big milestone. You're no longer a rookie!
