1280X finds 2 silver, cant find one of 'em:shrug:

I got them both back to the house, the 1945 Qtr. has to be around here somewhere. My friend and I hit a freshwater spot and I got a 1945 Qtr. and the Merc. pictured below. Should I clean it? How?

Glenn, i have a tumbler if you want to clean it up. i would try Blue ribbon first. Grats on the finds!

Do not clean old coins with any thing abrasive, use distilled water and wooden toothpick to get the dirt/crude off the coins.
Unless you don't care anything about the value of the coins and just want them to be cleaner looking, then go abrasive and use baking soda.
If you have nickels that are covered by crude you can use this trick to get them clean: first toothpick them to get the loose dirt off then grab a ketchup packet cut the top off the packet then submerge your nickel into the packet, fold the top of the packet to seal off the ketchup packet and let it set for 48 hours. then after that, get your nickel out of the packet and rinse it with distilled water, your nickel will be red, and then crude will be gone, you may have to repeat this depending on how caked the nickel is in crude.
Again do this if you don't care for the value of the coin.
If you want to retain the value of dug coins the less you clean them the more value they will retain!

Hey Glenn, I also use bakeing soda like witdwiz, my son showed me a little trick, Go to Taco Bell & get there real "HOT " Sauce, try this on a dirty penny first, put it into the sauce for about 10 min. take out & with a soft rag wipe, repeat if it does'ent come clean. The longer you leave it in the better. Give er a try.

Thanks for the ideas on cleaning and the nice replies, I think I'm going to wait to clean it as I like the patina from it being in the water.

I wouldn't do anything with that one it looks good the way it is. All the detail is there.

Hey great finds, I just bought a used 1280x aquanaut. Any tips for me? Does it have multi-tones for different metals? I'm going to try the beaches here in Fl soon. Keep up the good work.
