13 inch Ultimate vs. 12x13 Nel Tornado

I am on the fence on selling my Ultimate coil and replacing it with the 12x13 Tornado. Has anyone used both and chose one over the other and why? I have heard really good things about the Tornado lately.

Once again dirt makes the difference. If you have bad dirt the advantages of increasing coil size seems to diminish rapidly. The NEL is clearly the heaviest at 1100g compared to the ULT at 850g and the stock at 800g. I continue to try and warm up to the ULT but see little improvement in my dirt over the stock and find the small weight difference , while noticable , not the biggest drawback to the coil. I do not believe it separates as well as the stock and seems to slow response time down as well. Considering the weight of the NEL and the lack of noticable improvement with the ULT over the stock , I would have a hard time purchasing one.

See a dealer advertise the weight of the 12x13 at 1.9lbs approx. which is around 700 grams. Wondering where you got your weights for these coils? thanks JR

1.9 lbs = 860.7 grams
The imperial (avoirdupois, or international) pound is officially defined as 453.59237 grams.
These actual weights of coil and cord were from another thread which I plagerized from an individual whom I believe is credible.
Manufacturer weights do not include the cord and we're not talking about a Deus here. The biggest complaint about NEL coils for the etrac is getting the heavy coiled cable through the shaft.
You're swinging it --can't see the sense in not counting it..:)

Yes it all adds up. The numbers at the official sites show the Ultimate at 480g and the cover weighs 50g. the NEL shows 590g so it is a few ounces heavier. Can't tell you if that includes the cables. I have always had problems with the Detech's and getting them to thread up the shaft. Not so with the 13" coil.

OK ITS LIKE THIS--- THE NEL IS A HEAVIER S.O.B. BUT I LIKE IT BETTER THEN THE 13 INCH ULTIMATEIT HIT COINS LIKE A MOUTHER TUCKER---BUY IT AND DONT LOOK BACK :clapping:

I had the Ultimate until a week ago when it took a nose dive. Has been fine to rinse the sand off but guess I did it one to many times. It goes crazy now when plugged in. Just started in the middle of a hunt. Put the stock 11" on and stable. I have ordered the NEL as it states on web site that it is waterproof. The Ultimate doesn't state one way or the other on their site. I have sent them an Email to see what they say. I also heard from a friend that states his Ultimate did the same thing this weekend when dipped in water to rinse. That makes 3 Ultimate coils that I know of that have gone bad by dipping it in water to get the sand off. Even dew from the grass will cause this I'm told. The NEL may weigh more but at least I willn't have to buy another when it sees a little water. I also have saved over 30 dollars over the price of the Ultimate.

I had a Ultimate do the same thing..Think you have to unscrew by the coil and put a little Silicone in there.............I still use my other Ultimate..nel is way to heavy...

I have used the ultimate 13 a lot this year and have detected side by side with a detecting buddy who is very experienced and has the 12x13 Nel Tornado coil.
Our depths we were were getting were very similar and both got coins to about 11 inches. Nel coil is excellent also. Just heavier.
At the site we were at we noticed about a 1 inch depth increase over the stock coil as there were a lot of targets to gauge this off of and we had both detected
it prior with the stock coils. He just doesn't use his big coil as much as I use mine because of the weight difference & was thinking about getting a coil like mine.

I know this is an old post but wanted to give my 2 cents. After digging 1,000's of old coins with the NEL I decided to do a side by side comparison with the 13" ultimate. I found a silver dime at about 9-10" with the NEL and before I dug it I tried the Ultimate on it. The Ultimate would barely pick it up. Did this throughout the day at a large park where extremely deep coins are at and the same thing kept happening. The NEL just hit harder on the deeper stuff. Sold the 13" the next day on ebay. The NEL is really heavy but I just consider it a good workout and roll with it. I've learned to be ambidextrous when swinging so I would highly recommend that if you use a heavy coil without a harness. It's really weird at first but after a while you'll get used to it.

Hi Rusty I've watched all your videos on YouTube it's one of the reasons I bought the tornado coil.thanks for the great videos. Plus I'm really happy with it great coil.

Glad you enjoy the vids =) One thing I can say is that NEL totally messed up the wire on the new coils. It's impossible to get through the shaft and once in the shaft you can't adjust it. If you're considering a NEL I'd pick up an extra shaft for it too.

Thanks for the reply . I got a older version in great condition. I have a inline probe so it makes changing the coil a lot easier. Used it over the Easter weekend love the way it works.

dang i just posted my thoughts on the tornado coil in another post. ill copy and paste........ i c this is an older post but still it was brought back!

i have to agree that the tornado coil is a great coil for fbs explorers/etrac etc... i have one on an explorer se that i recently acquired. i used the pro coil, sef 10x12 as well a few smaller coils. what sold me on it and its now my main go to coil is that i hunt an old fair grounds a lot. Its still used to this day. Anyway, theres a certain area of the park that has bad emi. Its actually the area they put up rides during the fair. Well in this spot even using different machines i could nvr get them settled down enough to hunt it. I got the SE with the tornado coil an was searching around that area, i was running manual 26 sensitivity at the time, i couldnt even use 8 sensitivity using the other coils only time it settled was 7 sensitivity an channel 5. Well not paying to much attention i made it to the area of all the emi, didnt change nothing sensitivity still at 26 and on channel 11. I get 2 deep solid silver hits. 1st was a rosie dime about 7-8" and the 2nd was a very worn dateless SLQ. ive been thru this area many many times with so many differnt machines, coils ect... but once i used the nel, it didnt get all funky on me an it found what i walked over more than a year of hunting that place. Is this coil any better than the pro coil or the sef, i wont say cause there are other factors to consider, but was it better for that 1 certain area of emi..YES!.... i have a Etrac on its way, and i am certainly gonna try this coil out on it as well. Just wanted to put my experience in here with the coil.

Cant wait to try out the Tornado, I have a fifth Gen and am itching to get out there. Thanks for the info.

When did the 5th generation come out? I have had my Tornado for about 2 years.

Do you have one of the newer NEL coils with the thick pain in the butt wire? They changed their wire probably a few years ago and I was told the new thick wire has more shielding which will helps with EMI.
