14" Coil Questions...

Well I got out with the 14" coil on the MXT today.
Relic mode, disc at 3 or so, the coil would not
settle down until I dropped the sensitivity to
around 6-7. I was a 1/2 mile away from any power
lines. At the preset on the sensitivity, hitting
the ground or bumping into something made the coil
false like crazy. At 2+, it was unusable.
I emailed JW and hoping he will respond. I think
it is a loose wire in the coil. If you happen to have the 14" coil, how does yours behave?? Best to
all, Richard'nTn

A loose wire MAY be responsible for the false signalling when bumped, but it MAY also be two other possibilities: One, the coil lacks internal shielding, which would be a design flaw. Or, MORE LIKELY, the wire to the control box needs to secured so that it DOESN'T MOVE. Secure your coil wire, and see if this helps. Bigger coils "see" farther, thus the coil wire may give a signal if it moves due to being bumped. As to the need to reduce the power to be stable, I addressed this issue in an earlier post. Bigger coils "see" more ground, thus MAY (i.e. usually) need a reduction in power to be stable. Conversely, smaller soils "see" less ground, thus can use higher power settings than bigger coils. Hope this helps; keep us advised as to it's performance. HH Jim

I don't think it is a design flaw in the coil. I would bet it is a problem with your specific coil. If it were a design problem, none of the Excelerator 14 inch coils would be working and we have heard from Ray and many other detectorists that they are GREAT. I don't think it would be a loose wire or it probably wouldn't work, even at 6 on sensitivity. I believe you just got a bad coil. Sometimes that happens. I also received a 14 inch coil that would not stabilize and was very erratic at anything above a 6 on the sensitivity. It wouldn't hit a quarter at 6 inches. Recognizing that this was the exception rather than the rule, I called JW and he is taking care of it. So, you are on the right track. Contact JW and he will take care of yours too. Some of the readers of this post will undoubtedly read about your problem and take the opportunity to hammer Kellyco and the Excelerator coils. Don't just judge a distributor by the product he sells but by the way he supports those products. I believe JW will support the EXcelerator product and take care of mine, yours and anyone else who has a problem with them. If he don't, I will let you know. <img src="/metal/html/lol.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":lol">

Where is your threshold set ?? I am not an expert or an old pro but I have the 14 inch coil and it kicks the crap outta the stock coil hands down. Try this set up, first make sure the coil wire is secure and all the bolts are tight . Use relic mode, put the threshold at 9 o'clock position, set the disc to 0, pin point trigger forward and gain on 9 and ground to track. If it is still chatty turn threshold off, also it is is still chatty raise and lower ( bob) the coil til the ground is silent then try it again. How is your ground matrix ?? Are you in a lot of decomposing iron ??? If your ground is not hot and you don't have a lot of iron trash you may have a faulty coil. I have an area that is super trashy with iron and nails but I can run the gain at +1 without falsing. I normally run a lower gain to cut back on the strength of the trash signals. I have had it get chatty in my yard a few times but bobbing the coil up and down til the ground is silenced always helped this. Well I know know of 2-3 users on here have got them and they won't act right, This is not to good, beginning to wonder if Detech has some quality control issues ?? But on the other hand I had to send my mxt back and they replaced the coil and now it is fine, I guess it can happen but Makes me feel bad about posting about how great "MY" coil works then someone else gets one and it works like crap. I know it is an inconvienance but call JW, he'll make it right.

problem with anyone or the coil. It could possibly
be an error on my behalf, things happen that are beyond
anybody's control. Bashing is not called for
with any situation. Being self-employed, I occasionally have to go back to correct an error,
that's life. Accept my apology, I had no intent to
offend or start anything!! Richard'nTn

Thanks for all the suggestions. I tried everything,
all's tight, set up properly, and just to set the
coil against the ground or bump it slightly,
even around 5-6 on the sensitivity, gives off a
loud sound. Just a bad coil. It happens, and again
this is a problem that anyone could have. There
is no cause for any question of the coil manufacturor
or representatives. Thanks and best to all,Richard

Richard.
Not trying to bash anyone or the coils. Like I said I have one and it is super. Just hate to see anyone get bad gear man , that's all, I have done it and know it is a pain in the a$$. Does sound like you have a bad coil. Just wondering what is the temperature where you are at. I can not explain it but my mxt with this coil gets real chatty if it is much under 40 degrees. But the part where when you bump the coil against the ground or anything and get a loud sound would definately confirm something is loose in the coil.

No problem....It's a bummer but I got 3 other coils
for the MXT and Friday found 1/2 of a Breastplate.
So all is good in Tennessee. Best to you and if'n
your ever in this neck of the woods, we'll set down
and tell old metal detecting "stories" over a pot
of coffee. Might even take ya hunting. Richard

Richard,
I'll keep that in mind. Tennessee aint to far from here. Maybe one day our roads will cross.
