15 inch coils, which does everyone prefer?

TomH

New member
Folks,

I am considering adding a 15 inch coil to my Safari and am trying to decide between the WOT 15 inch and the SEF 12 x 15. As I said in a couple of other posts, I generally hunt in large open fields where the extra coverage would definitely be a plus. I'm not so concerned with extra depth as the stock coil is finding incredibly deep targets for me, but if either would add depth I wouldn't be upset

Any and all opinions welcome.

Tom Henrique

(bumping thread, hoping for an opinion or two)

I've never had a need of the 15" coil as the stock 11" coil is about as big as I want to struggle with weight and balance wise. Whatever turns you on though is fine with me. Wouldn't it benice try one out before committing $$$? Onus

Hey TomH
I put a post on here about using coiltex coils on the safari. I did get much feed back. So I went out and got one anyway. Which is the 15" Wot coil.
I use it on the beaches, it gets great depth on the dry sand and the wet black sand. Its good for covering alot of ground, it is also good in the trashy spots. It is very well balance and quite lite.
I haven't used the SEF 12 x 15. so i can help you there.

Onus,

Nice idea  What the hobby needs is a "Try it before you Buy it" shop to help us all make equipment decisions.

Rizsie(AUS),

Thanks for the info. I have also posted this request on the Explorer and ETrac forums and it seems that everyone that has used them agrees that the Coiltek is a very good coil. The SEF that my buddies use have certainly added depth to their MXTs, but, as I said, depth is not an issue with the Safari. I am already getting at least as much depth with the stock coil as they get with the SEF coils. The main problem that they report with the SEF 12 x 15 is the weight, they describe it as swinging a manhole cover on the end of their machines, so your comment on the weight of the WOT is very important. Frequently we will drive a couple of hours to a hunting location in VA or MD and we hunt until dark, so weight can become an issue for my tired old bones :sleepy: Also, some of these locations can be 500 to 700 acres, so coverage is the main issue.

Looks like I have decided on the Coiltek :clapping:

Thanks again,
Tom Henrique

Bart,

Now I'm confused :look:. That thread indicates that the SEF is a better choice than the WOT. Did you get either?

Any other opinions before I spend some money?

Tom Henrique

I haven't bought one yet. In reading more comments about the SEF, it sounds like the wires on the recently manufactured coils are a bit too thick and users are having trouble feeding the wire through the shaft. Bryce on the Explorer forum posted some very favorable reviews of the WOT, so I don't know which to buy. The WOT seems like it might be a bit lighter to swing but street price is a bit more than the SEF. Maybe I'll keep looking for a used coil of either kind to come up for sale.

If the machine gets too end heavy, I am out of business as I have a lingering back injury. My main objection is the weight and balance of the really large coils. I've had some issues with my Safari not performing up to par but I find the 11' coil has all the weight and balance perfected. I do have a 6" coil and had trouble getting the wire through the shaft. I tied a piece of string onto it and fed the string through and then pulled the coil wire through and it worked like a charm. The problem wasn't that the wire was too big, it was a coiled wire and the coils got stuck Once it was stretched out it worked just fine. Onus

Here's a Video I found with technique on how to get thick coil wires throught rod.

Where I hunt the stock 11DD works awesome! Do you notice alot of additional depth with the larger coil?I could see where the larger coil wouls kick butt in wide open areas!

Jason,

I haven't found any really deep targets with it yet but I really didn't buy it for added depth. The stock coil could really reach out and touch. I bought it for the extra sweep width because we do spend quite a bit of time in large fields.

Jason,

It weighs under 2 pounds. All I did was shorten the lower shaft by about 3/4 inch and the machine balanced perfectly.

I find this a very interesting post.

I hunt with a Quattro. I just added the procoil this spring. Quite an upgrade from the stock slimline!

On the weight issue. Last fall I got a Swing Thing, and I use it all the time now. I hunt for many hours at a time whenever possible, and I found it made a huge difference on my elbow and back.

You now have me thinking of a WOT coil too!

Good Luck,
Mark

Mark,

I have used the WOT twice now and can see where it could easily become my main coil. The extra sweep length covers ground much faster and the sensitivity is outstanding. Both times were large areas with little time to cover them and it was a definite advantage over the 11" stock. Bullets sound great and the only brass I got was a cuff button sized snap from work clothes but it read exactly where I would expect it to with the stock coil.

Pinpointing was excellent and the weight difference is hardly noticeable once the machine is balanced. I noticed one minor problem, if the sens is right at the stable point you will get false signals everytime the outer coil touches something with resistance. Corn stubble would drive you nuts :yikes: I had to set the sens at one below stable to reduce that effect and had to learn to ignore signals that I knew were being caused because I had crashed into something.

Hoping to get out this weekend into a recently cut alfalfa field to see how much falsing is caused by the thinner stalks. This field still has relics, but they are really spread around so the extra coverage on the WOT would be a plus, and they are deep, so I will get a chance to try out the depth of the coil.

Later,
TomH

I use the 18x15 s.e.f on my E-Trac..I like it alot!...I havent tried the wot coil..If you read the post ...The s.e.f has alot of people talking about the great results they are having.Good luck with whatever you choose.HH

Mark,

I picked up a Swingy Thingy and it really does make a difference with the 15" WOT Coil

After using it for about fifteen minutes I had actually convinced myself that it wasn't doing anything and disconnected it. My machine felt like somebody had taped a 5 pound bag of sugar to the coil and I immediately reconnected the ST. I'm a convert!!!
