1786 New Jersey copper, first coin of 2011

On a rare hunt last month I got the TALLIO cufflinks and have not been able to get out again since then, so this morning I had a window of opportunity and did get a hunt in cut very short by a back flareup. Anyway, in the first five minutes of walking into the woods towards a homesite that has been great to us over the past year, the SE gave that beautiful high sweet tone of a large copper and the Crosshairs verified, not very deep, but not at all unusual for woods hunting. A nice crusty looking copper appeared in the pile, then a nice back ache appeared and even though I only hunted a very short time, it was nice to get a copper.

I had no idea what it was, assumed a colonial of some type, since the vast majority of the 20 plus big coins found here so far were either colonials or early US stuff. As I cleaned it in the peroxide in the afternoon, the shield stood out and I knew I had my 16th NJ copper of my career.

Some careful cleaning, and hoping for some good detail, but it is fair to middlin condition, the ground did get to it, but still has some good detail left and I attributed the vairiety to be a Maris 15-T........

Very nice coin.......it's especially nice when the date is clear. You definitely have a good hunting site...

Good job......that is one sweet coin!!

what is a Maris 15-T variety? is it a grading system?

very nice find !!!!:clapping:

To unearth a coin from the 1700's must be indescribably exciting! Very cool. I hope your back gets better. Thanks for sharing your hunt and pictures.

Beautiful coin

It is always nice getting a early year coin, and a NJ copper is always appreciated, especially since I have been doing a circulation study of them for about 5 years now. The back is better, it must have been a muscle pull that I got digging the NJ copper, must be out of shape, darn winter. But the son and I are going back to this site today.

Went back to same site, this time with my oldest son and after nearly 3 hours of almost nothing to dig, we did get a few buttons, and my son got 3 Wheaties, LOL, what were they doing there (hunters I suppose). Anyway we were within a stone's throw of my truck and ready to call it a day when I got a nice button type reading and out pops a button that I thought was a 1700s blowhole type but when I got home I got surpised to see it was a Post CW Eagle button.

About 10 feet from where I got the button I finally got a no doubt about it Coin tone reading, Crosshairs almost solid upper right, not wavering at all, I switched t digital just to see what those readings were 03 28 and it was shallow. Dug and out pops a thick copper, we knew it was a colonial era type, just did not look like a Large Cent, and upon the cleaning process at home, I saw the words NOVA CA and knew I had another NJ copper, two in a row and my 17th overall.

This one is in very sad shape but I have enough details showing after removing most of the crud to see that it is a 1787 Maris 43-D Very Common and my most common found variety. But I will take it!!

I went out this morning exploring and looking for a possible new site, well I found one, not big at all, but I did get my 3rd copper for 2011, and guess what - another NJ !! unbelieveable, in 30 years of hunting I never expected to find 3 NJ coppers in a row and they are the only coins I have found so far in 2011. I will make a post with photos of the site and recovery and coin later, still cleaning the new find/finds.
