On a rare hunt last month I got the TALLIO cufflinks and have not been able to get out again since then, so this morning I had a window of opportunity and did get a hunt in cut very short by a back flareup. Anyway, in the first five minutes of walking into the woods towards a homesite that has been great to us over the past year, the SE gave that beautiful high sweet tone of a large copper and the Crosshairs verified, not very deep, but not at all unusual for woods hunting. A nice crusty looking copper appeared in the pile, then a nice back ache appeared and even though I only hunted a very short time, it was nice to get a copper.
I had no idea what it was, assumed a colonial of some type, since the vast majority of the 20 plus big coins found here so far were either colonials or early US stuff. As I cleaned it in the peroxide in the afternoon, the shield stood out and I knew I had my 16th NJ copper of my career.
Some careful cleaning, and hoping for some good detail, but it is fair to middlin condition, the ground did get to it, but still has some good detail left and I attributed the vairiety to be a Maris 15-T........
