1800's Padlock And Key...What's The Odds ?

I hunted an 1850's one-room schoolhouse site this week and among the things I found was a small brass paddock. After looking at it today I began to wonder about a brass key that I found at the same site last May. The key was found about 40 yards away from padlock. It is a barrel type key and fits the lock hole perfectly. What's the odds ? What's your opinion ?....Thanks for looking

Assuming the lock is junked just enough you are unable to see if the key functions? If it does/did work then I’d go get a lottery ticket!!!!

I was thinking the same thing 😂

I think the odds of that key belonging to the padlock are quite good. I don't think the odds of finding a padlock and a key that works for it are all that great. HH jim tn
Jim, looking at it this way makes a very good case for the key belonging to the padlock. Your logic has convinced me. Wouldn't you like to know the story behind the lose.

Yes, I agree. Go for the lottery tickets. I once found a Western Union lock on the property of the man that owned Western Union at that time. He has a big farm up the road from me. Naturally I gave it to him. Big and solid brass.
