1800's Pocket Spill!

When I got to the park, the sun was already starting to set. I figured I had about a half hour to hunt. This is a park that skunked me the last two times I hunted it. It's a tough place. I figured I'd swing my coil (10X12 SEF Butterfly) for a little while and dig some iffy signals. I dug a few junk targets and then scored an 1899 V-nickel in great condition. The weird thing about that nickel signal was that it had a conductivity number of 36 on my E-trac. That's a pretty high number for a nickel. I re-scanned the hole and got another signal. Out from that same hole came an 1898 Indian Head penny! Alright! Pocket spill!! My heart was racing. As if that were not enough, I re-scanned again and got another signal. It turned out to be a 1902 Indian Head penny. I then re-scanned once again and got another signal. It was very high toned and the conductivity number was 47. That really got me excited. I probed the dirt and spotted the glint of silver. It was quarter sized. I picked it up and saw stars peeking from the dirt on the coin. I knew then it was a Barber quarter - the first one I have ever found! I can't tell you how excited I was. My left hand was shaking as I filmed the find. As if that weren't enough - yup - there was something else in the hole. I pulled an 1889 Indian Head cent out of there! From that one hole I got a V-nickel, three Indians and a Barber quarter. I cleaned the quarter up after I got home. It's an 1892.

Without a doubt, that was the most exciting hole I've ever dug!!! I do have a video, but it's too late to edit and post it. I'll get it together and post it tomorrow. Dan

Thanks Dan. I can't believe the shape of that quarter. Straight from the bank and into the ground! That is going to be one exciting video, I'm glad you filmed it. Take care!

Your lucky day! awesome barber! just goes to show you can never tell just by tones what is in there...when in doubt, dig it out!

Hey live some for us too!
good hunting Dan WTG:please:

OCH,

Man what a great pick up...congratulations.
In this day and age to find an 1800's pocket spill must be as rare as rocking horse dung.
Beautiful coins.

Sweet looking quarter! All the pocket spills I come across are Zinc pennies and nickels. :ranting:

Congrats on the finds.

Sweet finds:super: That quarter is a beauty thats for sure.

Isn't this a GREAT HOBBY? I love it! Here's a video of the hunt in two parts. Why two parts? I didn't have the heart to cut anything out during the editing process. I wanted it all in there. Dan

Dan. Thanks for the videos. Appreciate it greatly. I wonder how many detectors have passed over that spot and disregarded as trash. I'm finding more and more that its the "strange" signals that can lead to a good find. Especially with a nickel in the mix. Congratulations man!!!

Yes, I agree wholeheartedly. Strange signals can lead to good finds. I knew the chances of getting a nice clean, two-way, high pitched signal at that park were slim to none. So I decided to "chase iffys." Iffy signals, that is. And it paid off big time.
