1830's Farmhouse: Check and Misc Items

Erik in NJ

New member
My first metal check with the number "46" - back is blank - there is "No" barely visible above the digits - it's a little smaller than a quarter. The other two items are lead I believe...the flat item appears to be manually holed and crimped near the bottom. Torroid is asymmetrical an appears crudely made.

Erik...I have never heard of a metal check. What exactly is that?...seriously. I bet some people don't know...and I'm one of 'em:biggrin:

I have a disc that looks exactly like the one in your picture but mine just has a 5 on it. You can imagine how my imagination was running away when i saw the unfamiliar gold disc with a 5 on it before i got it cleaned and then the disappointment...:rage:

I showed it to my mom yesterday when she stopped by and she thought it was the metal version of what a coat or hat check would give you today (plastic or paper)....of course since this was a farm it may have been an ID tag for a cow or sheep  It is machine holed so I'm sure it hung on a ring or something. I originally thought it was some sort of token, but I thought they were called checks - maybe someone here will tell us!

Thanks for looking!

Well when I found mine it was quite shallow - I was happy that it was not clad. I also thought it might have been an older coin like a two center or something unusual. I was still happy with it as it appears 19th century. Can you please post a pic of your? Thanks for your comments.

I looked through my cup o' metal things and did not see it. i actually may have filed it under "G". It had a hole in it an old fashioned 5 in the middle was the only marks and it was gold metallic color. Sorry didn't think at the time I posted that I may not have it anymore

Hi, Well I hope you find it - I think you had a pretty cool old relic there.....sometimes the relics are worth quite a bit more than the coins and are often much more interesting - like Bryce's old fob with the "10" on it and the fancy old design around it.

Hi,

Thanks for the feedback - my guess is that it's ca 1850 or so. Looks like the numerals were hand stamped at some point because of the irregular spacing. Looks like the "NO" (if you can see it in the pic) was original on the planchet. Any ideas what these kinds of checks were used for?

Regards, Erik
