I know back east this type of button would be a common find, Here in California especially in the valley we don't find these type of finds.
The site of this find is the oldest settlement of the Southern Ca. valley, This is were it all started back in 1849. I almost give up on this site with an abundance of square nails "dig them all day if I wanted," harmonica reed, Pocket watch innards, old iron fragments, bits and pieces of old china and old glass with a few teasers of copper relics surfacing until this Navy button surfaced that has encouraged me to press forward with this site.
Sixteen Men were killed by Indians on this same location in 1850, I wonder if one of those men wore the suit of this 1830's button. I'd like to think so but will never know?
Thanks for looking, Paul (Ca)
