Hello everyone.
Got out again this afternoon. Had a sight I've been excited about for quite some time and finally got permission. I was so sure that the place would be loaded with LCs and seated that I went out and bought heavy duty springs for my pick-up to help get it all home. Covered a bit a ground and found 7" clad dimes and Lincoln memorials. Not a good sign. I did get an few wheaties and a couple of buffalos.
Whoops. Not going to give up yet but this isn't the first time a highly anticipated site has failed to produce. I suspect 30-40 years worth of fellow MDer's had similar thoughts and beat me to it.
Anyhow.. Did some more boulevards on the way home. Dug up a very corroded and encased disc about 8" down, thought it was a clad quarter at first but the size was wrong. Did some harsh cleaning and out came the store token in the upper left of the photo. AB VAN COTT of Racine, Wisconsin. WATCHES.CLOCKS.JEWELRY. & FANCY GOODS. Store is listed in the 1852 Racine business index. Another site had it dated from 1845 to 1860.
Decided to try the same harsh cleaning(delimer and wire brush) on one of the buffalos I found today and it came out pretty darn pretty.
Also got a Japanese 1931 One Sen Coin (The year of Chinese I studied paid off- the Japanese use the same character set) and a cast Chinese coin(which features old style characters- no clue).
Only silver was a 1951 quarter. And an 1885 IH. First coin of the year to break the 1900 barrier.
Chris
