1881 o Morgan Dollar

Mark in S.E. IA

New member
Yesterday the 4th I went back to the park I've been to the past few weeks where I have been doing real good at and Fri the 4th was another gr8 day. I found my first silver dollar, a 1881 o Morgan. I never thought I would find one at a public park which use to be a school that was built in 1926. when I found the coin it had a piece of iron about 6" away from it but I could tell on my first swing over it that their was a coin and a piece of iron in that small area. I got 2 seperate hits. I just can't believe I found a silver dollar at a public park. I always thought that if I ever do find one it would be in a private yard.

Most of my finds on Fri come from the main part of the park which use to be the playground of the old school. The Morgan, the Walker and the Washington quarter were found around the back edge of the park.

The 2 rings are Sterling silver.

Wow. You did real good. You can tell that coil gets used a lot.

Holy mackerel, you had one fantastic day. I love the coins and the large ring is a real beauty.

:clapping: :clapping: Congrats..

I hope to find a gold coin someday before my joints get so bad that I can't swing a MDer anymore and someday's it feels like that day is here. The past year or so I've only been going out 1 day a week, I can't handle much more then that.

Mark......I feel your pain. At 58, I'm no youngster anymore either. With bad knees and ankles, I know how hard it is to get up and down while dirt hunting. I only dirt hunt in the fall and winter because of the heat, and man oh man do I feel those hunts the next day in my joints and muscles. It's really a work out!!!
Dry beach sand hunts are tough because of the soft, uneven sand you have to traverse.Three to four hours of this and your beat the rest of the day!! The good thing about it is, I rarely, hardly never, have to go to my knees... I don't use any scoop in the sand since most of my targets are fresh drops or only inches deep...I dig with my foot, bend over, sift with my fingers and retrieve my target.
Water hunting is the best for us older guys, that's why you need to move to Florida Mark...Even an old guy like me can endure hours of hunting and miles of walking and digging in @ waist deep water. It's easy on the body and theirs lots of pleasant sights to gaze upon (dark/mirrored sunglasses required) lol...... along with the occasional gold/diamond ring in the scoop. GL

Wow! I'd say that you had a great day! Congrats!

Congrats, and I know the pains of getting up and down. I'm 55 but my disks in the old back are bad. Past couple weeks there's been no hunting. The heat is on as well and I just don't do well in the bright sun heat anymore.

Incredible finds Mark! :beers:

Places like that don't exist around here. Even private residences don't yield like that, because most of them have been hit over the years. It's why I shifted my main focus to farm fields.

Ohh, by the way you the man Mark. Nice finds. That coin is the mac daddy. Ok I said mac daddy. I'm too old to know or care what's cool nowadays.

OLH, I wish I had places like that close to home. That park is a 2 1/2 hours drive from my house if I do not stop anywhere on the way.

I like to take road trips so every so often I plan out a route and do some research on the towns I'm going to hit and some times I get lucky and find a good place like this one.

Digdoggy, you can say it any way you want too, lol. I'm cool with it...

Now that is one great day........... CONGRATS!

Mark, I don't believe you have too much competition in S.E. IA. I wish my parks had silver coins left in them like yours lol You had an absolute fantastic day of hunting! Congratulations on a whole lotta silver!!

Mark, coming late to your post, you've got some impressive finds there, that's a nice looking Morgan from the New Orleans mint, especially since it's been buried for a while. Thanks for sharing! HH

Exceptional day Mark, you are good at what you do, know your machine well, you know how to research as well....you deserve EVERY COIN you get, congrats on your morgan!

Hey Mark, I'm taking your advice you gave on schools on another post. Started near me and a few miles away there is a high school. I see it was there and established in airial pics in 1965. I have the 1934 airial survey of the site and it was not there. So we can assume it was built in the 40's or 50's. Open multi use field is on the back edge in 65 and its the same today. I'm going to go hit it sometime this week. Its raining for a couple days now so it'll be good and moist a day after the rain quits. Its been so dry my machine was acting a little different. New England is usually got a nice moisture to the dirt.
Like you said in that tip, I'll note whether or not I hit any wheats. If a couple hrs don't produce I'm moving on. I'm having a hard time finding the age of schools here in CT. online. Its there somewhere, I'm just not finding the age of schools and parks in any listings. Thanks and HH
