I found a token today
that says...
Dog Tag
1882
B.W Smith and Co.
Lafayette, Ind.

has a buffalo and a guy chopping down a tree on one side and the other....... 57 ? in some boxes
Hope to have a video posted soon on youtube with hopefully some close ups

did dogs really need a tag out in the middle of nowhere in 1882?

very nice find....i have found 2 dog tags 1914 and 1941 oh ya and also 1933 all in remote isolated farm areas...animal control must have been a big issue ....that one you got there is very cool....

I found the same dog tag and same year on Feb. 5. in a corn field with my ace 250. I live in clinton, In. Ironic? Found your posting while researching. Can provide photo. Have you found any info on them?
 
Its a dog tag that must have been required during the time period.
The image on it is the Great Seal of Indiana
