1887 Seated Dime Obverse

Yeah, I know I know. I butchered a real nice find. I guess it's just part of the learning curve. Hopefully, that part of the curve is past me now. This dime was found at a park that I was shown by another forum member, Jeff from Mass., by Charles from Upstate NY and I today. I knew I had a silver dime, probably seated as that is all that has been popping out of the ground there. I told Charles after I had cut the plug. He scanned the hole, agreed it was definitly silver, and warned me about my OJ tendencies. Well, it's a hard compacted type soil with a lot of rocks and I did the unthinkable. Live and learn. I also got a "V" nickle, which I have to clean up so I can read the date, and 5 Indian heads, one of which is a very nice 1875. There is another that I cannot read yet but will post when I can. Again, we had a real good day hunting. Charles got another beauty, a semi-key date seated dime. He will be on here later on tonight to post pics...and give me a public ribbing.

I've told Charles the story of the mercury dime I once butchered. I put the digger right through the last digit of the 191? D mercury dime. How much you want to bet that it was a 1916-D before I totally wiped off the last digit ???

..seems like I slice up seated coins more than any other coins I find. And I don't find that many seateds. I've done worse so don't feel bad. Jim

LOL Ed. Charles told me about that today as a matter of fact. Maybe next time Charles comes to Boston, you can make the trip too. I am new to the Explorer also, I just got it on the 6th of this month. That scrape could have been much worse, it could have been a key date coin. On the other hand, it would have been better if I had carved up a silver Rosie, but a you can't win them all. I knew exactly where it was in the hole too, I was just too anxious to get it out. Lesson learned.

It's never the lowly silver Roosie or wheat penny you hit with your digger. Only key date Indian heads, Barbers and Seated Liberty coins suffer that fate !!! I spoke with Charles earlier and he filled me in on your great finds. I must say I'm jealous having only dug 2 mercury dimes today. I'd love to get over there to do some hunting. Hopefully Winter will hold off for a few more weeks.

as for the coin I wouldn't sweat it too much. Whether it's stabbing a find, selling it, over cleaning it, we all have regrets of some sort. Just find a better way and you won't jab the 20 center when it happens.

Actually the probe is working great. I cut the plug and probed it. I knew exactly where it was. There were a lot of small rocks in the ground at the place we were hunting and I was too anxious to get it out. Like you said, I have already found a better way way thanks to Charles. Hopefully, this will be the last victim.

Todd has seated feaver as you can see from the pic of this coin and should be considered armed and dangerous. If he enters seated park with anything sharper than spoon cut his coil wire okay.

dug an 1875 IH today with a hunky 1 inch square nail in the same plug, thats getting it down. I have a feeling we will be seeing a lot more posts from him in the future.

or maybe it was the rocky soil...more likely it was a bad case of seated feaver. Next time out I'll bring a tazer along, we'll put a stop to that behavior.

I think I'm hitting the ones I hit because I haven't pinpointed perfectly on the initial dig. Usually happens to me only on the DEEP ones. This quarter was at least 8 inches down. Guess I need to dig bigger plugs or straighter down.

Can you say X-1 probe?
