Hi Guys,
Here`s a neat piece that I found detecting about 12 or 15 years ago.I`m pretty sure that its an ashtray,(8 inches X 9 inches)but what I`ve never figured out is what the "VP" on the pot and the date 1904(which is made into the design is about.I would appreciate any theories. It`s one of my neatest finds. Thanks!--------Charlie

Here is the close up of the "V.P." and the date 1904.------Charlie

I was doing some research on it and I found a mug with V.P on it from a worlds fair, but what is the V.P.? Charlie just left my house. He brought it over here so I could take some photos for him. I do have a photo of the back I could show you guys, but it is just stamped brass sheet so it is just a negative impression of the front. Let me know if anyone would like to see it. Aaron

Connected to the Veiled Prophet celebration held in St Louis each year.It dates back into the 1800s and I understand there was a large V.P. Parade in 1904 in celebration of the worlds fair.Just a guess....

Hey, I just did a search on veiled prophet and found a book that had that same king like figure on the front of it. I am 99% sure it is going to be veiled prophet. Good call Dan! -Aaron

that you can cut and paste a picture to and have it search the net for that pic. Thats a fabulous piece Charlie! Sure wish I'd found it.
Chris

Nice work Chris and Dan!
Charlie, you have a beautiful vintage ashtray, done in the Art Nouveau style. Typical of this style, flowing lines of flowers and the forms of ladies. Authentic items of these are a hot commodity on the auctions and ebay.
Yours is a fine example, plus the historical significance of the St. Louis Veiled Prophet festivities. Ever nice! Congrats on that beautiful find, Charlie!

Thanks, Guys!!!
In a few minutes you cleared up a 15 year mystery for me! Now, how about the story of how I found it?
I was detecting behind a deserted house in the town where I was raised. Lots and lots of beer tabs- lots! Then I crossed over this. It was laying on top of the ground in the weeds upside down. When I picked it up it was a thick green mass of dirt and oxidation on both sides. You couldn`t see anything!I brushed off enough with my finger to see the king`s head and I said" oh, that`s the three wise men...something Christmas". I put it into my bucket(that I put everything I detected in) and decided to look at it better when I got home.
Well, I put the bucket in the back seat of the car, and sometime after my wife put the bucket in the trunk where upon I rode it around for at least a couple of months. One day I was at my dad`s and raised the trunk and saw my drill with a wire brush on it and this piece and decided to finally find out what it was. And the first place that I uncovered was the 1904 date- after that I took my time! And this piece is what it turned out to be! THANKS AGAIN EVERYBODY!!!----------Charlie
