1st Time Out with EXP II and you Guys were Right!

Not only was today the first day for using the Exp II but the first time I've used the X-1 probe. What a jewel that X-1 is. It actually works! Saves all kinds of time, is accurate and is very easy to use.

I didn't find a lot today, just clad and a lot of junk but I didn't expect too. The sounds are so different from the Ace 250 I was using it will take me some time to really understand what I'm hearing.

I didn't find the machine all that heavy at all. Nor to I see it being as complicated as it's sometimes made out to be. Yes, there's a lot for me to learn so as to be able to utilize all of it's capabilities but, like a lot of things, it's just going to take time.

Weather here is supposed to be in the high 60's to low 70's through next week so I'll be out everyday for 5 or 6 hours each day. Perfect timing.

A very Merry Christmas to All here and to their loved ones.

I recently got a Explorer II. Today I got the VHS tape for it it recommended finding a clean patch of ground setting the coil on it and hitting the Noise Cancel. Mybe I glossed over that point if it was made in the manual seemed like good advise to me. Just thought I would mention it as I havn't seen anyone else mention it but me being a newbie with it and all.

It's mentioned on the tape/DVD but just sort of so this is a good tip. I was doing it today. Have you read Andy's book? Well worth the price. I really get a lot of help from this forum and the Minelab Classroom forum as well. As you can see I'm VERY new using this machine but so far I'm really having a ball with it. Good luck - - - -

Cliff,

I think you'll like your new machine. Question about the Ace 250 though. I've got a co-worker that is interested in MD'ing but only had about $350 to get a detector. Based on what I read, I recommended an Ace 250 to him. Just curious if I steered him in the right direction to get started.

Merry Christmas mdr,s!!! I had gotten my ex xs in the middle of the winter, and in montana everything is frozen, so I tossed different coins out in the snow where I had no signals and practiced, but it wasn't until spring when I started really learning, what I ended up doing in the end was to put it into learn mode and taught it what I wanted it to find, every kind of coin and jewelry that I could get my hands on, even borrowed my uncles coin collection, till I was satisfied, and saved its program. I still dig pull tabs and fishing tackle. When in doubt, dig. Over the years I've become quite the trash man, but what MDer isn't. MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU ALL!!!!! Brian

Larry I was happy with the Ace considering it was a $200 detector. I did not expect more than what it could deliver. The best thing was that it started me learning the importance of sounds and to depend more on that than what the screen tells you. For starting out this machine is great. Turn on, set sensitivity to 5 bars or so, select the coin or jewelry program and start swinging. I did use the 12 inch coil as the default coil so that runs the price up another $70-80 but that's just an option.

I just read over my post. I must be stupid. I left out the most important point. Actually the first person that replied to it had made sence of it. I am amazed. My point was when you get ready to detect a location find a clean patch of ground. Set the coil on it hit the Noise Cancel button then the machine will find the quietest channel. Now the machine should be at it's quietest so you can get a good start. In my experience with other machines it is the simple basics of starting out right that cause the most problems and I can't understand why the machine isn't working right for me. Maybe some experienced users here can discribe how they get started when they first get to a site. When you have experience getting a good start will probably be easy but for a newbie it can be bewildering and probably the reason there are so many basically new detectors sitting in closets.
