1st time out with the XS

Like Bryce and others in the Midwest, I took advantage of the 50 degree weather and got my detecting fix today. I never used a Minelab before until today. The XS made the trip worthwhile. A 1914-D Barber, two Indians, 1891 and a 1908, darn, no S, a 44 wheat, two dog tags, 1959 and a 1960, a whale, couple of buttons and a Registered Illinois Motor Vehicle tag of some sorts. I have never seen one like it. It was nice to get out and have fun.

Now imagine what kinds of finds you would be making after you get say a good 2-3 Months of use under your belt. Lots more! You did very well for a 1st time user. That Barber Dime is in great shape! Sounds like you got a positive impression from your first hunt with the XS, I did also on mine many years ago, and never looked back or felt bad about switching detector brands.
I know a lot menition the tones on the XS, I really never considered that a problem nor had many different tones, maybe it is only those who hunt that do not use Ferrous Sounds that get all the flutey sounds, I sure do not, but I hunt more isolated areas, non pulltab infested sites.

Hi Des, No, I got the XS as a clean up detector to do just what Bryce suggested. In fact that is what I was doing, going over a yard I had hit with the DFX many times. The dime and Indians were at the 6" range and probably could have found them with the DFX with the soil conditions being IDEAL, wet, but not muddy. I'm anxious to see what is below the limitations of the DFX in highly mineralized ground.

Mystery solved on the Illinois plate. The bottom 1/3 is missing where the date would have been. Ones like it are on Ebay with the date of 1915. Along with the date is, Motor Bicycle.

I have been using and trying to master both the Explorer(XS, E11 , SE) and the DFX for some time.
I think I'm doing well with the ML Explorer line but I have still can't get as far with the DFX. I don't dislike the DFX. I just don't like it as much as the Explorer.

It'll be interesting to see what opinion you can form over time about the Ex-XS over the DFX .
Not for any reason other than for a learned one that is made by another person who is experienced with the DFX and has decided to try and hunt with both.
