OK folkes here it is - my traditional end of year post.
It has been another Explorer kind of year i.e. the finds have flooded in and the firsts keep on coming. I'm only going to post the totals and my one favorite find.
As a beach detectorist I depend on the weather to get people on the the beach. In 2004 that just didn't happen so it has been a quiet year for gold. As far as I can tell I found 56 rings, two of which were returned to their owners. Their total weight was 8 ounces of which about half was 14 or 18ct, reflecting the time I spent in Europe (where higher carat gold is more common). For reasons that I can't explain a much higher proportion of the rings had stones in them than usual, including a few helpfully labelled as diamonds, although I haven't had anything professionally checked out yet.

My silver finds were about the same weight as last year but there were a lot of older finds amongst them including several large coins.

I found much more spending money than last year and estimate that there is about $2,000 in the pile that I kept. There were also some coins used for parking charges, tolls and other incidentals and the older copper coins which are in th scrap box.

I haven't included photos of the large number of older finds as they are still in bags and boxes all over the place and anyway you have seen them before. However, I couldn't leave you all without posting my only gold coin of the year (for about the 20th time). There are plenty of more valuable gold coins about but this one is a career best for me!
