2500 and Salt Water

Last year I tried my 2500 on a wet sand salt water beach. I'm not a novice to using or setting up the 2500. The detector was practically unusable. There was so much falsing that I couldn't tell between a good target and a false tone. The falsing occurred across the entire conductivity range. In a single sweep the detector would indicate a dozen targets. While I was in Salt mode, I backed off the power to minimum, and there was minimal difference. In salt mode and normal discriminate mode, I accepted only targets above penny, backed off the power, manually ground balanced the detector, tried the 12." coil, all to no avail. The drier the sand, the better the detector behaved. The detector operates great on dry land so I don't think that it's a detector issue. To make matters worse I was detecting with a friend who was using a Fisher CZ7 (which also has a Salt mode) and it operated perfectly. Does anyone have any ideas? I'm going back down east in a few weeks and I don't want to have to buy another manufacturers detector just so that I can do some shoreline. Other than around salt water, the 2500 is an outstanding machine.
