2nd time swinging...1st gold/ring

So I went out in the front yard to mess around with my new 705. this was only the second time using the machine and as many of you know I am new to metal detecting. Well I knew my yard had a lot of iron in it so I figured it would be great practice learning to listen to the tones. I was swinging around the septic tank and I got a great high pitched tone. This was the first thing that sounded decent in the yard. Everything else was low negative TID's. Mostly old nails and screws. I carefully dug a plug. About 4 inches deep. Didn't see anything so I poked around with the pinpointer. It was still in the hole but close. I moved a bit of dirt with my finger and BAM! Bright Shiny gold. After cleaning it I found the inside of the band was marked 14K. WOW! I still can't believe it. HH!

Wow. Only second hunt and you found gold. That is great. A big congratulations. You will be hooked for sure now.

Ditto! Big congratulations on a great second outing! :clapping:

This was a great learning experience too. I now have a better understanding of how the tones work/sound. Especially with all the ferrous targets I was digging in the yard. But I also found that just because it was a ring doesn't mean it will be a good solid tone like most of the coins I have dug so far. The TID was pretty stable but the tone was broken as I was xing over the target. Is that because it is not a solid piece of metal like a coin. I also thought the broken sound may have something to do with all the loops around where the stones are. Does this sound logical?

Also, thanks for all the tips advise and encouragement from everybody here. This is a great community and I have learned so much from reading past posts. I probably would have been lost without all the information you guys have put out.

The ring not being solid like a coin can make it have a beep- beep sound. Or there could have been trash under the ring or close to it. I would practice with the ring a little.

Have you had a chance to read the eBook, "Understanding Your X-terra" by Randy Horton (aka Digger)? If not there is a link to the book here in this forum and may be one on Minelab's webpage. I know personally I picked up a lot of great information from that book and learned a lot from the coil comparisons.

There is nothing like the thrill of finding your first gold and popping your first shinny silver coin from the ground. Even when I don't find much at all, still enjoy finging the different things that come out of the ground.

Happy Hunting,
Matt Bullock

The "different" shape of part of the ring could give a variation in ID numbers, depending on the direction you are swinging...but if the tone was scratchy, more likely to be something else either under the ring or close by. You say you were detecting near the septic tank....is it a concrete tank, and could it have re-inforcing steel in it?

Yes a concrete tank. That might be it. I swung over the area after I removed the ring and still a few scratchy sounds but couldn't find anything. Maybe it was the tank.
