3 Mercs With Muted Volume

miserman

Well-known member
Today I went back to the circa 1910 lodge that I last hunted in May. Most of the site has a moderate amount of trash except one small area around two large Oak trees. This area has a large amount of buried screw caps with some having the glass bottle neck still attached. I have hunted around these trees in the past but after 5-10 minutes of the LOUD signals given off by the screw caps,I always moved to other areas of the site. The constant sound of the caps seemed too annoying. While hunting today I moved into the screw cap area and used the limiter switch on the headphones to mute the volume of the loud signals given off by the screw caps. This muted volume helped me ignore the multiple loud signals from the caps and concentrate on the deeper "coin like" targets. I moved slow and stayed around the two screw cap invested Oak trees. The screw caps had VDI readings of 67-68 with full bars on the Confidence Scale. They also always showed depth readings of 4-5 inches. The Mercs all had VDI numbers of 71-74 and depth readings of 6-7 inches. The 3 Mercs were spread out among the two Oak trees along with the one Wheat. I'm not sure why there were not more Wheats in the area, but once I started ignoring the screw caps, the coins seemed to be obvious signals. Total hunt time was about 2 hours. I hunted in Motion All Metal ,Sens 88 and Threshold set to 0(one click below +1) I have never used the muted mode on the headphones before today, but I feel this method helped in the trashy area of this site and I will use it more in the future....Thanks for looking

Good findings. I always head for the older trees first.

Another nice hunt miserman, learning to adapt to your surroundings keeps the silver coming. I've actually turned my volume down in trashy areas but not completely off, keeps your brain from getting fried.

Thanks still looking 52, essentially that's what the limiter switch on my headphones does. When you switch it up, the volume is about half of what full volume is. I had never ran less than full volume before this in fear of missing deep targets. I now believe that this is not the case. As you stated, adaption to conditions can give good results.
