I' m having an issue with pennies, dimes and quarters registering as a 38. What is my basic problem? I set the "Sens to Auto", Ground balance the detector 8" off the ground and start swinging. I dug 6 pennies in a row that regged a 38. Dimes were doing same thing. Never found any quarters!

I had the same question about a month ago. Prep answered it this way...

Lincoln Cents before 1981 are still good copper should read that high in most soils what are the dates of your Lincoln's?In my book a pre 1981 Lincoln's is almost as good as a wheat they are even getting a little harder to find. Should read almost same as a wheat penny what is your readings on wheat penny?

Bottom line is... if it reads 38, I'm diggin!
Hope this helps,
Bunker

my pennies register at 34-36 dimes 36-37 quarters are always 38. But like he said if its 38 dig it. What are your guys gold jewelry pieces coming up #?

when I was hunting on a salt water beach... Numbers were skewed... Does your ground have a high mineral content ( lots of iron ) ?? Maybe thats the cause... A 38 reading on mine is a quarter.

Bunker is right about the pre 1981 pennies showing as a 38.The zinc pennies will show up as
a 36-37 on your machine. My machine does the same on the newer pennies too. Gary

That's one thing (maybe the only thing) that annoys me about the Safari. Pennies and quarters 'sometimes' give the same target ID. I understand copper pennies and dimes hitting the same, as it also happens on my F75. Too bad the Safari doesn't have a wider range of target IDs like the E-Trac.

Most of my pennies range from 32 to37. Wheats at32 to35 Had some pennies this weekend hit 38.Dimes hit 38. Quarters hit 39.Found silver dime at 4 inches, hit 38 (1946 rosie) A silver ring at 38 a t5 in.

This past weekend, I did notice that in coin mode/auto sens/ conductive/noise cancel, that the pennies initially tid'ing at 38, did not have that sweet, high-pitch sound that I've heard with quarters and dimes. When re-scanning the pennies after removal, they seemed to assume a more familiar 35 tid.

Ditto, I constantly get fooled by deep wheaties that sound exactly like silver and read 38. It's ok because I would dig those signals no matter what, but my heart always starts pumping a little faster on those deep 38's that sound like silver. Zincs mostly come in lower that that, but I have had IH's come in at 35. Quarters also come in at 38-39 but I always run High Trash, I think if I would run in Low Trash setting the TID would probably lock on a bit better. Also, remember to noise cancell every 30 minutes or so. This can have an effect on the TID just going a hundred feet or so from where you originally noise cancelled.

Sounds like I hit a soar spot on the Safari! I love this machine, just tired of digging pennies. They do ring as a 34-36 after removing from hole. I was also last week having all dimes and quarters ring at 38. "CUCKOO"
We shall figure it out!

Dig on!

Whilst holding the detector still, press the
Noise Cancel button on the control panel.
Safari will automatically scan and select the
quietest operating frequency and should run
smoothly once complete. This process takes
approximately 20 seconds.

I noise cancel (select noise free channels) with my safari just above the ground about 1/2" or so.

Remember your placing an antenna above the earth that varies the propagation of the detectors emitted frequencies because all soil varies in conductivity, mosture content, minerals, etc.
So you allwoing your machine to elect what frequencies are least impacted by the characteristics of the soil its swung over. Cancel it consistently and you'll get consistent performance.

You might have a buggered machine but its unlikely. Cancel every once in awhile during a search to adapt the detector to varying soil conditions. Remember to run your detector ith fresh good batteries. When a detector is operated with declining voltage and current supply it's circuits are adjusting to a that and it's less consistent.

Good luck out there....

I was once lucky enough to catch Andy Sabisch on the phone and asked him. The 12 in the manual is an error- he told me to do the noise cancelling at what ever height I hunt-- in other wards and inch or 2 off the ground. And yes hold it still while it counts down and do it fairly often and for sure when you change any setting. Hope that helps. Andy's books are better than the manuals. He'll have a new book out on the Safari in the next few weeks. Any book by him is worth every penny.....

Thanks for clearing that up mmaayan36.

I agree that any book written by Andy will be the best on the subject because he will analyze every aspect
of his research combined with a lot of field experience.
