it is an error- you are actually supposed to "noise cancel" and the height you swing the coil which should be 1 or 2 inches above the ground. The manual that come with the detector has a few errors. My best advice is to buy Andy Sabisch's book when it come out in a few weeks.

Hello Diggitty,

I would be inclined to follow the advice given by kschae4 and do my balancing with the coil on the ground.
The individual he's quoting is the expert with Minelab detectors even mine, the Explorer II.

Respectfully,

The Nutty Teacher

After about a year to a year and a half from when I first bought the safari, it started giving lots of 38 readings on pennies. It also reads 38 on some bottle caps and pieces of aluminum. I am starting to think it is a flaw in the program of the machine. I am only thinking this because of all the similar posts I've read, and by experience. Of course I am always gonna dig a 38, but it seems like a false reading to me. I now have more pennies than I know what to do with. Ron

As on old TR detector user pennies are not reading as pennies they read larger depending on the HALO effect of ground composition the green stain around an old penny could be as large as a Quarter. That is why in some locations people find more pennys and old deep coppers at greater depths because it sees bigger target than just a coin depending on erosion of coin.Gold and silver have very little HALO effect unless in salt water ever see how encrusted size on TV that that silver piece of eight is 2 to 3 times its original size.Ever dig a hole and lost the coin you may have disrupted the HALO pinpointers are the best thing to come along in metal detecting in my 35 years of hunting.Just how important is it to you to have a accurate target ID remember they have been around for 20 years and are still are nothing more than a guideline and were caibrated under Ideal conditions which none of us have.If you buy the etrac you can program the detector to ID better for the location you hunt your favorite park, school, etc. go somewhere else with very different soil conditions you will be reprograming chasing the tail of the dog or downloading that program into your computor to use at that spot at later on the etrac because it cannot adjust to HALO erosion effect either.Ever go to spot and find that silver coin right out in the open that you hunted with your latest and greatest detector pull 4 silver coins out of your favorite park that you thought you cleaned out want to do it more often. It is time to turn your radio on find the weakest signal/station that you can find and when you hear it better the next time find even a weaker station until that is the guideline to use to pick your very best hunting days reception is reception either with a radio or metal detector some days you cannot hear your radio station you will find your detector just does not seem to be running as good don't believe me try it and go to your test garden on a bad radio day by the way it will also effect your target ID we do not have perfect conditions if we did there would nothing to find.By the way minelab has not done anything on ground balancing it is the same as it has been for forty years ground cancel at the height you are hunting.

The moister in the ground maks a diff. also. When the the ground is very wet I get pennies reading 38.37My quarters are always 39.Halves 40.

I just received my Safari and haven't even had a chance to check it out yet. Being new to this hobiie I figured it best to read "Andy's" book first. Just read where he says to actually set the coil on the ground then hit the noice cancellation and let it do its thing. Maybe that will help, just a thought

Just a fact of life pre 1983 pennies can hit dead dime on any unit because of their mettalic makeup...Usually if I get a solid dead 37 its a dime but if I attack from several directions and you just get one 36 bounce chances are good its a penny..as far quarters dead 38 and a nickle is a solid 14 so I have no answer for that part of the question..although feel your mineralization is the culprit.

I noticed the higher I cranked the sensitivity the more trouble I had trying to I.D. what coin was under the coil. When I've had the sensitivity jacked way up, have actually had pennies occasionally I.D. higher than quarters, a real bummer. Also noticed my coin I.D. problems didn't start until doing away with the icons...

Put the coil on the ground when you noise cancel. Thats where it is being used. I just got a 6x8sef and what a difference it makes on the ID, sound and seperation in trash. You have got to get one. The 11" pro is grt but the 8" sucks. Minelab needs to work on the coil selection. Clad pennies are at 34, copper at 37 and silver is 38. Even clad quarters are 37. Null out the 40. Auto-Hi trash
