3hrs, 4 Coins, No Silver, And I'm Happy!

Well, They finally took the beans off the field that I've been wanting to hunt (I'd thought that they had taken them off earlier, but that was a field further down). An 1854 topo map showed how the road had had a dogleg in it to go around a sinkhole, and where it came back into line there had been a house. On an 1874 plat map, the road had been made straight and the house was gone. It has been farm field ever since.
Since I had no idea what to expect there or even where the house was exactly, and since it's a huge area, I took the 705 w/Coiltek 15" 3kHz All Terrain coil so I could cover some ground. Within ten minutes I dug my first coin, an 1848 Large Cent! And it was a beauty! Remembering all of the times that the first find was the best of the day, I almost packed it in right then. Instead, I pressed on. About 30 minutes later I got another good hit. A drilled no-date Large Cent! Woohoo! Two in one day! I kept on, and in another 45 minutes I got another solid 44-46. An 1850 Large cent! And it was pretty good looking too! By this time I'd been out in the cold and wind about long enough. I have still only gotten just past the headlands into the field, so I've only scratched the surface in terms of area that I need to hunt. So working my way back towards the van I get ANOTHER hit. A drilled and shot 1847 Large cent!
These are the oldest American coins that I've dug in this neighborhood, and they were RIGHT NEXT DOOR!! I can walk there!
Anyway, it was a banner day, and I'll be back there soon and often between now and the time that the ground freezes. I have no clue as to what else might still be awaiting me, but if I find anything else you can be sure that I'll be posting about that hunt too.

WOW, the 47 an 50 are just beautiful and the other 2 are not that bad either because they are LC's

A big congrat's on finding those coin's and let's hope their is more nice coin's to be found in that field. :super:

:clapping::thumbup: congrats

Wow those are some of the best looking ones I have ever seen dug. Congratulations.

What a day! To find 4 LC in a day is awesome! Some of the best looking large cents i've seen dug! There has to be some old silver there too! Need any help?

Mr. Longhair, you have made some incredibly nice finds! The 48' and 50' are in very nice condition! Being right next door tells me you and the land are going to become real good friends  Time to bundle up and give it another "go".

Those are awesome coins! I just love that patina old U.S. cents get on them.

It will come Al. You just have to get your coil over one. :beers:

I just looked at the pics again, and realized that the no-date coin is of the 1816-1839 variety, making it the oldest U.S. coin that I've dug around here. I sure wish that it was in better shape.
I'm planning to get back over there tomorrow after work to see what else awaits.

very nice finds. Good luck there. What potential!

Just got back from another short hunt over there. This time I took the 6" Digger.
I scored a fancy but broken suspender clip, an OX shoe, and only one coin.......an 1832 Half Cent! :bouncy:

Great find. The US half-cent is one of those coins that has eluded me for over 40 years. Congrats! HH Randy

Nice coin OLH & just before winter sets in. I went out after work today for an hour or so & froze my butt off. Found more bottle caps, nails,& tin can lids. I hate the way these old lids give that repeatable high tone in the 38-44 range, looking to be a coin but with a larger footprint.
Got a question for you.....do coins shift around in the ground enough so in one year you may not detect it but after a winter or two it shifts to a different position that now it's detectable? Is this a reason why MD'ers go back to "hunted out" sites & find more coins?

Absolutely! Frost heaves the ground, snowmelt and spring rains saturate it to soup, tree roots grow, etc....
Look at all the farm fields full of rocks, even though they remove them with rock pickers periodically. That alone is evidence enough to me.
If the earths forces can keep pushing up rocks for 150yrs, it can certainly shift coins around.
