They are Silver pieces of eight--Eight is a whole coin & cobs are pieces cut off the whole coin! The nicer finds are Golden Dabloons?? I have a few silver pieces won at club meetings or bought from Roy Volker, who rented sunken ship areas from The Fishers & did undersea searches with finds found but not everytime! He worked off the FL Gold Coast ( I was blessed to be there once with him & the Club's president & his wife while he was blowing sand from the sea bottom & blowing it onto the beach along with Coins & relics) in the 80's while he was with Whites of Sweet Home, Oregon that sponsered our MD Club in St. Louis, MO! Was fun & I liked our monthly club hunts as a member & was Club Secretary for awhile but the divorce & my poorer health ended that! Even got to go on board of One OF White's Yachts--such a privilege for poor little me! WOW! Ma

And I thought a cob was a dumb guy from Iowa...... LOL, well I learned something so add it to my bucket list!!!!! Thx

To make change for a dollar, people sometimes cut the coin into halves, quarters, eighths, and sixteenths to match the fractional denominations that were in short supply.
These are rare finds but they are around in older areas. I think a quarter is called 2 bits.

Yeh! Each quarter was 2 bits! Therefore, 2, 4, 6 bits, a Dollar! I believe this is Spanish, as the ships that went under by hurricanes were from Spain & loaded with Spanish coins of Gold & Silver! T he coins found on the FL Gold Coast are mostly from the 1715 Fleet that went under, up & down along the FL Gulf Gold Coast, but some ships have never been discovered, as yet, & they believe one of them was carrying the Mother LOAD! Mel Fisher's & Roy Volker's finds were from the 1715 Spanish Fleet! The Fishers found the Atocha & it was loaded with valuables & they were still looking for the ship with the Mother Load when disaster happened & his son & his wife drowned during one night & then MeL got older with health problems, I believe! You can search the NET for Mel Fisher's Gold, Silver & Jewelry place in FL! It is unbelieveable what the Fisher's found & the time & money they spent to find the Atocha with all its Gold & Etc. Very interesting about their search & the long, heavy Gold Chains found & Etc. Spain must have been a very RICH NATION! WOW!! Rafael, says these cobs he found were in Mexico & were not in a container; so just dug out of the ground & a nice valuable find for sure! Unusual though for that many to not be in a container of some kind! Ma
