5 Hour hunt gave me lots of goodies today:super:

Well niterider_58 and I were supposed to hunt today...but he punked me out. Something called "work" he said.:crylol:
While he is still waiting on his minelab pro coil which seems to have been on backorder since the summer of '67:rofl:....I'm still cruisin' along with the SEF and 1050. Seriously though..I can't wait for his coil to come in so we can do some side by side comparisons...but heck...I just hope I'm not to old to hunt by the time it gets here.
I ventured to see my parents today and visited a park that still produces after 30 years of poundin'. Problem is that it's about to become "off limits" because other hunters keep leaving holes and NOT filling them in. It sure as heck isn't me...because I only get to hunt there 2 or 3 times each year. I had 2 different town people come up and tell me there have been some people hunting it quite often...and that they were leaving big holes. Because of this...the town is considering passing an ordinance banning detecting. Wonderful....I now may not even be able to hunt my OWN hometown park because people are coming in all the time and NOT filling in their holes. Hey... parks are fair game to anyone...so have a good time ...and good luck hunting. However...if you're going to leave unfilled holes...and mess things up for the rest of us....PLEASE STAY OUT OF MY PARK.
Sorry for venting...but I can't stand it when hunters leave unfilled holes and just toss their trash next to the unfilled hole. It takes about 2 seconds to stick the trash into your pouch...then throw it away at the end of the hunt. I won't even hunt with people who leave the place in worse condition than when we got there. I always do my best to fill my holes in...so I guess I just expect everyone else to try and do the same. I can't tell you how many holes that were left by other hunters...that I stopped to fill. I also lost count of the amount of trash from other hunters that I stuck into my pouch because they had left it next to a messy hole.:surrender:
Anyway...other than that it was a nice 5 hours with pretty steady ...but deep, iffy signals. I got a SWEET silver pocket spill at 9" which turned out to be a 1919 Merc and a 1914 Barber dime.:bouncy: The signal really jumped around ...but stayed in the high tone...so I think one of them was on edge.
About 20 minutes later I got another goofy hit...but again it pretty much stayed high tone. The cursor also skipped around the top right for the most part...so I dug. Out popped 2 wheaties. I ran the probe in the hole again...and got a nice very high hit. Out popped the 1942 merc. Two multi coin holes in one hunt...pretty cool.:wiggle:
I then came upon a 20 foot section that was full of pulltabs...but they were deep...so I concentrated and listened for anything that peeped. Well...after finishing that 20 foot section...I had 2 1800's injuns in my pouch ...along with a third 1902 injun.
Plugged along for another couple of hours and popped out a couple more wheaties and the silver roosey...all from 7" to 8".
Right before quitting...I got a sweet high tone bouncer...but the signal stayed sweet all the way around the hole. I dug down about 8" and then ran the probe. I got a solid high squeaker...so dug down another 2" and out popped the 1926 merc from 10" down.:smoke: A nice way to end the hunt. I ended up with 5 silver...3 injuns...and a handful of wheaties. I can only hope it isn't the last time I get to hunt the park. Problem is ...when people don't fill in their holes...we all know it ruins it for the rest of us.

GEE ZS BUDDY IF YOU DIDN'T WANT ME TO USE THAT BACKHOE YOU SHOULD OF SAID SOMETHING  LOL:punch: :puke:

Also have to mention digging in dry ground, especially with a plugger. Hope you find the potato heads that are doing the damage and show them the light.

Chris

And some nice finds.

I hear you, Bryce... We had a fellow in our club that is a heckuva nice guy, but when it came to recovering targets....
At the time we both had Garret ADS III's and knew the machine well enough to hunt with 12" coils regularly. Trouble is, when he pinpointed, he used the 12" coil as a "cut around" to make his hole!; even for shallow targets. He used this technique in parks as well as private lawns. Every time I think of the homeowner's reaction after a few days had dried out his 'manhole cover', I shudder! We just couldn't get him to change his digging technique, so after a while, no one wanted to hunt with him. Too bad, too as he was so affable, he could get permission to hunt anywhere.

I try to dig no bigger than a 4" x 6" index card, or smaller for all finds, except really shallow stuff that I just pop out with a screwdriver....When I do cut a plug, its a 3 sided 'trapdoor' that I dig deep on the sides to keep as much soil attached to the grass as possible. Then I just recover the target and flip the trapdoor closed after replacing any removed soil. It's a lot easier to match the plug to the hole again if the plug has straight line sides, instead of the usual inverted cone. There's no doubt as to how the plug fits back in the hole.

(By the way, see my post about your settings...they worked well for me too!)

Might be worth the trouble of talking to whomever may promulgate the new rules and see if they can make it illegal to leave holes as opposed to detect and/or dig. Preferably with a nice high fine!

Sorry to hear about your Home Town Park and the possibility of it being off Limits to Detecting in the future. What a person needs to do is find the guys responsible and ask to see their Detector. Then smash it right in front of them and ask them "have we learned anything yet about not covering holes?". People that don't fill holes and leave a mess tick me off and ruin it for everyone else. They should keep an eye out for this person or persons and then when they see them digging holes without covering them up, then call the police and have them thrown out and warned that next time they will be sitting in jail. Hope this wasn't your last hunt Bryce in that Park. You did well and it would be a shame to see the rest of the Goodies sit and rot in the ground due to some nonsense. Good Luck and HH.

I hope they catch the knucklehead who's not covering his holes and leaving trash. It really burns me that people are too stinking lazy to fill a hole and pick up the trash. It ruins it for everyone and gives a bad connotation to the sport.

Nice finds Bryce. Don't know what you could do about the "others" not being resposible enough. It would be difficult to catch them unless you were at the park almost every day for a good part of each day & that's not possible. I feel like I make a pretty good effort to fill in all my holes & dig not quite a full circle but one I can flip up then flip back down when I am finished. I would never leave any trash in or next to the hole. Ethics aside, it just doesn't make sense from a detecting standpoint. You never know how many times you will go back to a place and any trash you can remove ends up being less trash (aside from the new litter) you will have to deal with the next time. If I get an iffy iron/silver signal & dig & if the probe nulls out in the hole & I know it's iron, I'll go ahead & continue until I have pulled out the nail since I have already dug a hole (unless the ground is real hard, there are rocks, or it's real deep). That way I won't ever have to sweep over it again & wonder if it's good or not.

Having said all that, I probably shouldn't point too many fingers. I know I have probably killed some grass in my time. There have been times where I would hunt somewhere, then go back a week later & be surprised by dead spots & think "what the hell?" "It didn't seem that dry last week". Sometimes it's not easy to know when to stop hunting for a while. I guess that's why I am not that crazy about summer anymore. It seems like in the scorching heat, even if it isn't really dry, the grass can easily die unless you watered it right after you dug - but who can do that unless it's your own yard? I'm looking forward to fall where the cooler temps & somewhat shorter daylight hours don't suck the moisture out of the soil near as fast as right now.

[replying to my own msg]

Though, come to think of it--since I'm not one that generally thinks new laws are necessary and ones on the books can often be used--perhaps the police could arrest those who don't fill their holes and charge them with vandalism. Whomever is doing it is already showing criminal-like pyschopathic behavior--not giving a darn for anyone but themselves.

knipper, those 12" holes sound pretty big! But I sometimes cut a fairly large (though not that large) if I know i'm going deep. Trying to dig deep is really hard through a hole you can barely fit your digger in. And, if sufficient roots and soil are attached, they wouldn't be any more likely to turn brown than a smaller plug would, would they? (though they probably looked pretty scary flapped back)

you always did a great job of filling your holes. It's the goofs who leave half the dirt on the outside of the hole...or just don't even bother to tap it down IF they do even pit the plug back..that ruin it for all of us. Then there's the fact that a lot of them leave the trash just sitting there outside the messy hole.

out of towners hunt my park. Heck...we all like to visit other parks. The problem is when they come every stinkin' weekend...and don't fill their holes...AND leave the trash beside the mess. It just looks bad to the small town people to see this type of behavior:confused:
Keep your fingers crossed for me buddy.
