5 Hour hunt w/ 6" Excelerator coil while fighting the rain.

I can honestly say that this little 6" Excelerator coil has become my favorite to use. I can run it absolutely hot and it doesn't false...even when I bump it on tall grass stubble. I had the Excelerator 4.5 x 7 coil and it is a great coil too. In fact it was my favorite until now. This is my second actual full hunt with the 6" coil and it pulled a lot of coins out of areas I had previously hit with my stock SE coil. It's a pretty trashy site and I pulled some of these coins out of a hole less than 2" from a piece of can slaw or rusty nail. Another fact I can state with 100% truthfullness is that each and every one of these coins was found at depths of at least 6" to as deep as 8". I did not find one single coin at less than 6" and I would say that well over half of them came from 7" or more....and 4 or 5 came from 8". One of these mercs was 7" down straight on edge. I dug the hole and there was nothing there but I got a good signal with the probe on the side bottom of the hole. I took my finger and sure enough...7" down straight on edge at the side of the hole was a 1937 merc.
I then got a strong hit and dug down over 10" until I finally saw something. It looked like a rounded piece of thick wiring so I stuck my finger down and rubbed accross it. BIG MISTAKE because it was the top part of an old razor ...blade still intact (pictured) and it sliced my fingertip wide open. It took 15 minutes for it to stop bleeding. I also found a tiny washer type object pictured next to a new penny just to show how small it was...which gave me a solid high hit from 8" down so this coil is very sensitive to smaller targets.
I ended up hunting for 20 minutes...then dashing for the car because of rain...then back for a while longer. I did this off and on for 5 hours until I had enough!
I ended up with 17 nice teens and twenties wheaties...3 mercs...2 nice indian heads...and the razor which nearly sliced my finger off.
When I hunt large areas and need to cover ground faster then sure...I'll pop on one of my bigger coils. Otherwise the 6" is staying on. I had plenty of confidence in it after I posted on it a few weeks ago. Now it's become my favorite if I'm not in a hurry. It gave me a nice solid hit on even the 8" coins. I could easily tell the difference between a 6" clad dime hit and a 7" silver dime hit. These finds may not seem all that impressive to many of you but this is a site that I have pounded for thirty years with many machines including my SE. My research usually leads me to a weeded up- Jurrasic Park setting so I really enjoy going back to a heavily pounded site to see if I can pull some more goodies out. It gets frustrating for me when my research leads me to a dead end or a weed field. I have found myself hitting "hunted out" sites more and more lately.

That is a fantastic haul Bryce for a 5 hour hunt. I have found a lot of those Pesky Small Copper Washers over the years. I just wonder what they were used for? Did you factor in the amount of time you sat inside your vehicle or not? Very Nice Finds though and it looks like you have an excellent site to keep pounding with that 6" Coil. Continued Success, Good Luck and HH.:detecting:

Hey Bryce, that's quite a haul! Sorry about that razor. Looks like the 6" coil is making a clean sweep of all those goodies!! Keep it coming man!! HH EddieB

Glad to see you get out and have a little luck.I went sunday and didnt find anything old but did get out and almost got my truck stuck its good to see mud for once in a long time.Congrats on the great finds, and good luck on your next hunt.

JW told me it was a excellent coil. That it was every bit as good if not better then the 4x7" excellerator coil I have. I got the 10X14" excellerator coil and I still need to post my Results on the black sand hunting I did with it. Another story though. When I get time to look around to find my Notes I wrote on it I will post the results. I will look for them tonight. It is a excellent coil though. BTW I had to pay for mine just like the rest of you did. :D: :D: Jerry aka Tinfoil

I bought mine off this forum for $100 used if I remember right. At first I wasn't sure about it but I put some time on it and now really like it. It separates better than any bigger coil I have used and it loves coins on edge. It is heavy but it covers a lot of ground. It seems that coil finds me a lot of indian heads.
As for this little 6"...it's not coming off unless I am at a large area and just simply have to cover more ground. It hits my 8" deep silver dime in my test garden better than any coil I have including the bigger ones...seriously.

Yeah, it really loves dimes on edge. It didn't false on that Wet Black Sand beach either like my SE coil does. If you turn it around it will balance a little better. It is a tad heavy though. Well I am getting into my Post on it. Will just leave it at that till I get my notes found. Later Bud, Jerry aka Tinfoil.

I couldn't do much diggin after I sliced my finger open though. Let me know if you are going to make it to the St. Louis hunt so we can hunt together.

the amount of coins you find but at least I'm finding some. You are much better at researching than I am! I am having fun though and take it as a chellenge to myself to go back to "hunted out" sites and pop more goodies out.

Hello Bryce, Minelab replaced a board in the SE and it is definately running much better, but I'm still not satisfied with the ability to ID properly. I've decided to get an EX2 for a backup or maybe the main. The biggest improvement was when I changed over to the EX2 coil. Thanks for asking Bryce. Hey bud, keep those great posting coming!! EddieB

you guys got me second guessing on coils. I use the stock coil on my SE. I find it to work just fine, except yes it will chirp hitting high grass stubs. I have used small and large coils on different detectors, but never on the SE, or XS. I have never noticed any difference other than not covering as much ground with a small coil however pinpointing with a small coil is much much faster. I see, and here everything with my stock coil, its just hard pinpointing when there is alot of trash. I use to carry two detectors when i had the XS, I would find it with the XS stock coil. Then use my fisher CZ-7 with a 5" coil to pinpoint it. Now that I Have the SE I was just going to teach myself to slow down and pinpoint with the stock coil. Is the smaller coil really that much better? If so maybe I should see about getting one and see what i'm missing. Ted

Hello Bryce, I don't know if you wear gloves while detecting, especially digging; but I use the nitrile coat knit glove that Lowes carries. They fit comfortable and give you better protection than even leather gloves. Give them a shoot! HH EddieB

Bryce,
is the Excelerator coil you used the same as the Excelerator EQ2 Coils available on Kellyco's site?

I have been using the Excelerator EQ2 16.5" coil with great success, but I pinched the cord and I think I ruined it. Looking t replace it with a better coil that searches at depth.
