5 Hours...only 3 coins...but one is the Holy Grail of Injuns'...the 1877:surprised:

Sad thing is...it's NASTY...but it is 100% for certain an 1877...as the scan clearly shows.

I couldn't care less about the grade...although it would have been nice if it would have been half as nice as the other two...or half as nice as the reverse.

It's an $850 coin in G-4 good...but this one would probably grade C-1 crappy. Still it ought to be worth a couple hundred bucks.:)

I told my hunting buddy today that coins are scarce at this park I took him too...but if we found a coin...it would probably be an old one.

A couple of weeks ago we each found 1860's shield nickels here.

I have popped out some very old Injuns' here over the years..so I put on the 10 x 12 SEF coil. It handles iron much better than the pro coil for me...and just seems to find old green Injuns better than ANY OTHER coil I have.:super:

I only found 3 coins...ALL Injuns'... ALL 1880's or older... ALL less than 7" deep...AND all on edge.

Right after I scanned them...I stuck 'em in olive oil so I don't mess them up.:beers:

I dug the 1881 Injun'...then less than 14" away...got another sweet hit that sounded between pulltab and injun'. :)

I wasn't going to admit this:cool:...but for a split second...I had second thoughts about digging:rolleyes:...but then came to my senses.

NO WAY I pass up this hit....especially when my buddy yells...."Dig that S.O.B":bouncy:

3 things kept me from passing it up...1) the sound was close enough to an injun' hit to investigate:thumbup:.....2) the cursor did the injun' dance up the stairs to the left:thumbup:..3) the hit was only 14" away from where the 1881 popped out of.

My buddy and I pulled it out of the hole and he checked it out. I wasn't even sure it was an injun' for a short while. All we knew was that it was an old penny of some kind.

He spit shined it a little...then I did the same...then we saw the feathers on the head-dress...so we knew I had a "greenie".:clapping:

I then requested that my buddy use his top secret, black thick rimmed, super-duper, Mr. Magoo glasses to see what the date was.:crylol:

He has to be careful with those powerful babies...and take them quickly from the pocket to the eyes. If they catch any sunlight on the way...they burn a hole in whatever they are pointing at. The lenses are about 1/2" thick and heck...you could start a fire with these bad boys.

He glanced at me for a second as I handed him the coin...and I thought he was going to burn a hole in my shirt.:smoke:

He still couldn't make out the date...so I spit shined it again...then asked to use the goggles.

When I put the Magoo goggles on myself....the date JUMPED out at me:biggrin:...and especially the last two numbers...DOUBLE SEVENS:surprised:....YIPPEE. :clapping:

My arms and hands were just trembling and shaking.

Again...I know it ain't purty...and in fact is pretty nasty...but it is REAL... I DUG it...it clearly has double 7's....and it's MINE.:)

It's now many hours later...and my hands are still shaking.

Another moment I will never forget as long as I live.:super: This hobby has provided me with so many moments over the years.

Try Hydrogen Peroxide instead of olive oil on some of the other ones. Think you will be pleased. Green colored cleans up well. Green crusties..... Fugget about it.

Chris

dude, nice find. cogratulations.i am certain i too have one but the date is so poor it cannot be confirmed. that is an awesome find. soon i will purchase the 10x 12 sef based on your recommendations.

Wow! Great find there...I would take it out of the oil ASAP and rinse it with a little soap and water to remove any loose dirt and the oil and have that coin professionally cleaned, graded, and slabbed.....like you said, I, myself wouldn't care about where it graded, but it'd be nice to take the proper care of it for posterity since it is a piece of history - it might come out better than you think. Here in my part of NJ the great majority of Injuns come out of the ground like that. Congrats again on that super find!

Thanks Erik. I used to clean injuns' just like you said...and never had problems.
the last few times however...when I use water to remove the dirt...it really screwed them up.
In fact...Phil found a very readable date Flying Eagle cent at this park. He used a little soap and water on it hoping to bring out the detail...and it turned it into a "Wounded Duck" instead of a flying eagle :detecting:

Olive oil always loosens the grime for me...then I might also try a little soap and water.

I was just really afraid of screwing it up any...especially since the date is clearly visible. I got lucky...the front is nasty...but the double sevens are clearly there.

Thanks for the advice. I think I will pop one of the other injuns' out of the oil and use some soap and water on it like you suggested. Depending on how it looks...I might do the same to the 1877.

Take care

Thanks Chris. I usually do use a little water...then give them the peroxide bath...but once I saw clear double sevens...I was afraid to mess them up:biggrin:

Thanks Aaron.

Don't hesitate on buying the 10 x 12 SEF coil. There are a lot of really good coils out there right now...but the 10 x 12 SEF coil just "finds stuff" for me in my soil....and it really sniffs out deep or on edge injuns'

It is hands down my favorite normal sized coil here in IL.

It is ALL MINE though...and I dug the beauty...rescuing it from the cold ground:clapping:

Too bad the front wasn't as nice as the reverse:rolleyes:

Hi there - when I say soap and water I mean just brush it gently with a soft toothbrush or something - don't scrub it or anything (scrubbing that catches the loose dirt may have damaged the Flying Eagle cent as this is almost like using sandpaper to clean it)...you just want to gently remove the loose dirt and oil. I would use a soap like Dawn - just put a drop on each side, wet it, brush gently, then rinse well - I suppose you could use distilled water. That's what I would do if it were mine, but someone here that is more knowledgeable on this will probably tell us what is best to do with a coin like this.

Great find there Bryce! :beers:

hello Bryce IL,not really for me to tell you a vet of 35 when ive only got 8,but i would not put oil on any coin or artifact.got somthing going on through the british museum myself at the moment, and nearly come close to putting oil on the said stuff, only to be told by a representative that that was ill advised and could affect the item's involved ,a few thing's that will become clear later on in the year, hoping to join a selective few on that one.everyone does it differant i know ,but if you go into THAMES&FIELD london speak to GOD the curator{30 years of experience liasioning with the british museum}im sure his one of the best person's in the country if not the world,to tell you how to get the best out of any individual coin.the website is a mini portfolio for the fella's on there anyway.j ps.if you need his email i do have and i think he would be more than happy to help you out.

Bryce excellent find.To find a 1877 IH is one of my goals I hope to complete as a hunter.Congratulations!HH Ron

even though it's really dirty it's been in the ground for a long, long time. Point being, it was lost before it took a lot of wear and tear. If you look at the rim, it is very thick and evident, well worn indians will have a very thin and worn rim that will also wear into the date which also brings me to my second point.........even though it's just had a quick "spit shine" the 7's are very strong. I wouldn't be surprised to see a letter or 3 in the head band providing the fertilizer hasn't gotten to it. Give her some TLC and let's have another look at her. Can't wait.

Congratulations on the 1877 IH Bryce!!! :clapping:
Like you said, it's nasty, but it's yours!!
I really wish you would remember to bring your
Digital camera or a video recorder, so you could
record some of the "YETI Dances" that you talk about.
It seems that Phil gets as excited as you do sometimes!!

Nice going Bryce.:clapping: That is a awesome find buddy. Been awhile since I have dug any injuns. I'm sure I passed over some by not digging those reading in digital 22. Good luck on your next outing. HH.
