5x10" DD/HF Coil and the 6" DD/HF Coil - Visible Differences

Great info, Great posts. I' always learning something here. I have the 6"DD HF and for me it works great. As the leaves fall and the snakes hide here in NC I am going to do some prospecting and will tell ya if I have any luck. Always has been gold here. Most of the mining stopped at the war between the states. When gold was 20.00 an ounce it might not have been worth it. Now at 1k an oz it is. The smaller coil gives an advantage mot only in tighter places but in concentration in signal. The 9" HF may be fine at the beach but not here. To much junk, minerals and you just don't have the sensitivity. Some may differ and that's OKAY, this fall|winter I plan on having "color"ful posts.

In your initial entry you said "The 6" DD HF Coil (Super Sensitive/Waterproof/ NO replaceable Skid Plate)"
My wife just bought me a new 6" DD HF coil for my birthday, and when I picked it up I was able to purchase a replaceable skid plate for it. I think it was like $14.95. So they are available.

I wonder if you could clarify Nero......

You said;
To Surmise:
*Elliptical (5x10) = Fast and effective but only for the gold fields. Exclusively used for Prospecting on Gold Fields only.

In your opinion is the 5x10 coil really only useful for prospecting? I have been really liking the 6" HF DD but wanted to go a little faster so I ordered the 5x10. I do coin, jewelery, relic hunting in old parks.......is the 5x10 not suited for this at all?

Thanks,
Dave

Just got in today from location. Been away for a few weeks working on a movie ("Australia") which should be released in a couple of weeks. I would have liked to have spent time Prospecting with the X-Terra but didn't have time to pack it as they only gave me a couple of hours to get to the airport and jump on a plane.

Olderndirt: There was no optional cover/skid-plate when the 6" coils were out earlier this year so they must be a recent accessory. Good to know though as I would like one (or two).

Crusty: The Elliptical coil provides superior discrimination and was designed to work specifically as a Prospectors coil on the tough mineralized Goldfield soils. However, a number of coin shooters have chosen to use this as their main coil because it has a good sensitivity for objects near the surface and a broad area of detection. The Concentric coils can penetrate slightly deeper but the field shape is in the form of a cone so the sweeps need to overlap one another much close when sweeping with a concentric coil than if a DD is used.

Since you are using a 6" DD HF coil for coins, you'll know by now just how slow you need to move with this coil when covering larger areas. It senses deeply but has to be moved slowly when detecting at depth. The 6" coils are designed for working in smaller areas or zones with high trash volume. If you like to use the HF coils, then the Elliptical will work for you for other targets as well. I've dug enough with my own to know you can find both gold and non-gold coins with it (such as a tiny nickel & copper threepence coin) and virtually any type of nail you'd care to imagine.

With a number of people using the Elliptical Coil for coins and relics, it's really a matter of preference. Remember that any coil will find metal, but different frequencies and coil types offer different benefits to the user. 3khz (for example) is ideal for Silver coins yet it will also detect other metals - but it is favored for it's sensitivity to silver. 18.75khz is ideal for Gold prospecting yet you won't see too many coin hunters using it except on the beaches. The ability for the Elliptical coil to function well in highly mineralized ground (such as on the Goldfields where other metals are present in the soil) means it will possibly perform better than other detectors in a salt water environment because the electric field generated by the coil of most detectors is affected by the conductive nature of saline sea water.

18.75khz is deemed by Minelab to be the most useful on the VLF detectors like the X-Terra. Low frequencies will be sensitive to smaller nuggets but almost every coil from any brand of detector will detect small metal close to the surface or on it. Higher frequencies tend to limit the ability to accurately discriminate. The best detecting range for most detectors is between 3khz and 20khz. Some other brands of detector go as high as 71khz ...which is rather unique. Different frequencies will penetrate the ground to various depths and also offer different reliability in identifying a target. Most detectors specializing in Gold seem to be in the range of 16-21khz

Great posts!!! made a copy for my wallet.

I will be at Rich Hill the end of the month and look forward to using and testing both the 6" and the 10"x5" coils.

Great board!

[size=large]Well all you Guys have help me alot, i'm a new be also with this detector, and when your starting out with a new one you need all the help you can get, the only coil i don't have is the 6" DD and I'll end up with that pretty soon, again thanks for all that info, it help a great deal. I tried the 6 inch HF coil in No, Calif, and I gave up,it drove me nuts on Hot Rocks, beeped every few inches

bubber, I just got in a new area and the hotrocks are everywhere beeping on my X-70, in Prospecting Mode with Iron Mask at 5. For some reason I did not turn the Iron Mask UP to see if it would elliminate hot rocks but instead I hunted in C & J Mode, as the numerous hot rocks all showed up as -8 so I blanked(notched) out -8 with the sensivity at max 30 and it worked fine. (Some say the hot rocks come up as +48 also but I did not experience that at this spot). Less depth in C & J Mode but works very quiet over the hot rocks then. I wonder if I turned up the Iron Mask much higher in Prospecting Mode, would that elliminate the hot rocks also, does anyone know ??? (Yes I already know I will lose very small nuggets with the Iron Mask up high.)

Wow...It's awesome to see that this post I started just over 1 year ago is still being added to !!! It's great to see so many different people with similar interests from all over the country, using the same machine for various "treasures". With my health problems, just getting out with my machine and covering ground is a blessing. A hobby that gets a person out from behind a desk, away from the front of a computer, far from the hypnotic snare of the television set and other inside traps is something that everyone should respect and give a try. Heck....you don't even need to be able to walk well to be able to enjoy this hobby! I've seen people out working ground from a "scooter" and doing so at LEAST as effectively as anyone doing so on foot. Maybe they can't cover all the same ground, but they can still get out and enjoy this game of hide and seek we all love to play :)

While I haven't gotten to use my x-terra as much as I would have liked this last year, I can only hope to put it to more use this year. In fact, I haven't even gotten the 6" DD HF coil dirty yet! I have been able to put the 5X10 to use, though, and can certainly tell a difference between it and the 9" concentric MF that came attached to the machine when I purchased it. I saw someone else mention Rich Hill in another post....which is where I got to use my 5x10. Being a member of the gold prospectors association has opened some doors to discovery of locations all over the United States, where I can go look for gold with my detector or a huge range of other mining technique's....but this site is about detector's, so I'll stick with that. I have been frustrated since the purchase of my x-terra package, over the fact that I never received a "user's manual" with it. I am sure it was supposed to come with one, but between all my back problems and the doctor/hospital visits I just never was in a position to get a hold of the company where I purchased it from to tell them about the missing manual. I just wonder if anyone knows if there is any place on-line that I could download the manual from? I guess I could always call and explain my situation to the company I bought the detector package and extras from and see if they would be willing to send me a manual....or maybe if I called/wrote directly to Mine-labs???? I'm not really sure what avenue to take, but it's frustrating to have to ask basic questions about functions I haven't "figured out" on my own. I was lucky in Arizona to be able to have true experts around to show me the basics, but "they" set everything up at the time, and to not hold up the festivities I just said thanks and off we went.....rather than ask for some time to go over the functions with me. I'm sure that someone would have happily taken the time to go over everything with me even after the "hunt"....but I didn't take the initiative and lost out on that...shame on me. So here I still am....a year later.....several hunts and finds later....and I STILL don't even know all the basic functions of the machine because I have no manual! lol :) can I slide by? Yeah....Do I want to know more? YES! I want to know a LOT more!!! So if anyone knows a place I can download a manual from or if you have an idea of where/how I can get one, please let me know.

Hi, you can down the instructions from minelab.com. In pdf format. If you were shorted, if so I'd call your dealer to ordering a new one.

For now here's the X70 manual link:
http://www.minelab.com/consumer/page.php?section=272&id=4&pId=8&pNm=X-Terra%2070

Thanks so much for the link, but I will still give Kellyco a call (since I saw their adds slapped all over this website, I no longer feel the need to worry about giving them free advertising). As big a company as they are, I don't see why they wouldn't send me a user's manual....even after a year....especially when I spent over 1,000.00 initially on the package and all the extra's. I still have the original bill of sale and anything else they might ask for. I know as a person in the retail business that I would do everything in my power to make a customer happy...especially one who spends a significant amount of money with me/them :O) Until then, I at least have the pdf version you linked to me.

Deepest thanks-

Dave.

I just had a new original manual sent to me from Minelab about a month ago, they didn't charge me a penny. I will look back in my E-mail records and post a name if I can find it.

Thank you again so very much for your help, my friend! I have emailed her already and have her phone number as a back-up. Have a great vacation and find some awesome artifacts on your trip!!!

first off, welcome to the X-Terra forum. You could search through all the past posts concerning coil differences, and get some good information from lots of knowledgeable folks. But here are some of my opinions in a couple paragraphs. All three frequencies and any of the X-Terra coils will find copper, silver, gold and any other metallic target. However, lower frequencies are more responsive to higher conductive targets (such as silver and copper). And higher frequencies are more responsive to lower conductive targets such as gold (as well as iron and aluminum can slaw). Larger coils typically hunt deeper than smaller coils. And smaller coils are more sensitive to small targets (like small nuggets or jewelry). Concentric coils produce a magnetic field that I refer to as an inverted melon. Some people call it cone shaped. But it is more like the shape of the bottom of a mixing bowl. In other words, it doesn't go down to a point. It gradually gets smaller in diameter as the depth increases. That is why I advise people to overlap their swaths by at least 1/3. Preferably by 1/2, if you want to get the deeper coins. A DD coil separates targets better and is better suited for hunting in highly mineralized soil conditions, due to it's design characteristics. If you are interested in the technical nuts and bolts, let me know and I would provide more information. But for the most part, I've found that if I can ground balance my 9-inch concentric coil with a GB setting of 28 or higher, it works great. However, if I am in a place where the concentric gorund balances with a reading of less than 28, I usually switch over to one of the DD coils. In addition to working better in highly mineralized soil, a DD coil separates targets better. The reason is because the receive section of the coil is directly down the middle of the coil, from the front tip to the back tip. They call them DD coils because if you drew a capital letter D, and then drew another one backwards, on the left side of the first one with the straight portion being shared by both letters, it would look similar to the two windings are in a DD coil.

I hunt for old coins at old sites. My favorite spots are old homesites and "long forgotten public areas" that existed 100+ years ago. Today, many of those sites are farm fields. If I am hunting an old homesite, I'll put on my 9-inch concentric coil at 3 kHz. Like I said, all three frequencies will find coins. But I like the 3 kHz for two reasons. One, it is more responsive than the other two frequencies to silver and copper coins. Two, as such, it is less responsive to that old deep iron (nails, pieces of implements etc) that is found around many of the places I hunt. I hunt in multiple tone mode and usually all metal. When I go over a piece of deep iron, the harmonic audio tells me that it is not something I am interested in retrieving. If I happen to get into a trashy area where I am having 5 or 6 "hits" per sweep, I'll usually get out the small 6-inch DD coil at 18.75 kHz. Now, 18.75 kHz is the last frequency (of the three) that I want for hunting around lots of old iron. I'd rather have a lower frequency in a small DD coil. But, they don't make one. So I am willing to sacrifice some of the discrimination information for better target separation that the DD coils provide. And the smaller DD coils are better than the larger DD coils for separating targets, due to a smaller footprint. In other words, they don't have to analyze nearly as much soil (or as many targets) at one time, compared to a larger coil. Granted, the smaller coils won't hunt as deep. But I am convinced there are more old coins still hiding out there due to being masked by adjacent targets than due to extreme depth.

My soil around here is moderately mineralized. Very seldom to I find an area that the GB number is less than 30. As such, the concentric coils do very well for me. Therefore, I don't need the additional weight of the 10.5 DD coils. In moderately mineralized soil, the concentric coils will hunt deeper than a similar sized DD coil of the same frequency. Your coil choices will have a lot to do with where you hunt and what it is you are hunting for. Coil prices.........FindMall is sponsored by some very reputable dealers. And I'm sure any of them would appreciate your business. There are links on their banners at the top of each forum. Most of their dealer websites have product pricing.

Hi all
Hey Bill. I was intrigued (an intellectual way of saying jealous) by the statement "I hunt 90% of my time". As soon as the wife falls asleep I sneak out but, I live in Antelope Valley, Ca. Is there anywhere out here that's a good detecting place. The Acton area has a lot of prospecting history but, parks aren't that old, the mines are closed off and everywhere seems to be full of shell brass and lead. Any of you So. Cal. guys have a suggestion for quickies? Maybe I can get my detect time up to 10%.

I am amazed and thankful for all the information I have been reading on this forum about the X-Terra 705, I have been detecting since 1986 with various machines but this is my first machine that I can hunt coin and relics to prospecting. I like hunting for silver and copper so it sounds like that I should maybe use the 3kHz coil, the soil here has moderate mineralization, I have only received this machine 2 weeks ago and still learning about much of its features. I would like some help if I could and setting-up the X-Terra to get the most depth in hunting around fairgrounds and places where there is not to much trash, there seems to be a little more to it then there was when setting up my Explorer.

Again..... from reading this forum it also sounds like I will be using the 5x10" elliptical coil (for which I have not received yet that was supposed to have come with my order} for beach hunting, I will be mostly looking for gold articles, would this be better done in prospector mode?. Again I would like to thank all of you for the wealth of information I have read. The new be.

Welcome to the X-TERRA forum. Glad you're finding this site useful. I might suggest, if you have specific questions, start a new post and ask away. Lots of good folks on here who can help you out. But some may not realize there are new questions being asking in a post they've already read. HH Randy

Hey everyone! My back has kept me out of the "game" for quite awhile, AGAIN.......so I am a bit behind times.....AGAIN :O) And since I have at least close to 10 posts on this thread already, and have gotten some GREAT information, I'm not going to even try to go find a possibly more appropriate thread for this question. I'm thinking this is the third summer I've had my X-Terra 70 Pro.....it's been at least that long, and sounds about the right period of time, but I have noticed the 705 out now as the "replacement" model for the 70. Sorry to ask for such a detailed answer, but I just can't sit here for long enough to look up the information myself. It just hurts too much. I only hope that I can get my back "healed" enough to be able to use my detection equipment again. Otherwise I'll have to give it to one of my nephew's, sell it on E-bay or give it to a less fortunate detector at some point....but....my question, of course, is : What are the differences/upgrades/etc on the 705, when comparing it to the X-Terra 70 pro....which is what I have. I'm really looking forward to some great responses to this! While I can't sit here for long to write/read, I can definitely print off those awesome responses and READ to my hearts content :O) lol Seriously.....if I can't detect.....reading about it or watching it on tv when Gold Fever has an episode using a metal detector, is at least something I CAN do. By the way.....In the 2008 and 2009 season's of Gold Fever (as well as maybe some before that and possibly some of the earlier 2010 episodes), Tom uses the X-Terra 70 Pro in many of the episodes. After seeing it in so many shows, I emailed Tom Massey about it and he confirmed that it was definitely an X-Terra 70 Pro, and that he LOVED the versatility and simplicity of use that the machine offered.....not to mention the weight and ease of breaking it down to put in his back pack. It was just another confirmation that I chose a really good machine for my first detector. OK...enough typing for me now. I humbly await your wise, well organized and amazingly detailed explanations to my question. I just hope all of you who helped fill me in back then, are still around to enlighten me this time :O) ...or, that there are new folks who are just as knowledgeable and detailed to take their places :O) Thanks a ton in advance!
Dave.
