6" Excelerator coil and 7 Hours of Hunting Sunday got me 21 Keepers...7 of them SILVER!

[attachment 63511 silver.jpg]Had a family reunion in my hometown on Saturday so I didn't get much hunt time in. Later in the afternoon after some volleyball games and way too much food...I headed to the local park and tried to get in an hour or so hunt. We pulled in the park and saw 3 fellows swingin' Explorers. They road tripped and had been there for the day and found some goodies. I hardly ever get back to my hometown much but did pull some nice stuff out of that park in the 80's with my White's and 90's with my CZ.
Anyway Bill, Mike, and Gary...if you see this post.. it was nice to meet you guys and I'm happy to hear the finds you made over the last few weeks. Sometime I'll give you guys a call and maybe head up your way to hunt. I have never cared who finds what when I hunt with people...it's just good that the deepies end up in someone's pouch and I'm happy for whoever finds them.
Anyway I ended up mostly helping out my lady with her machine so I didn't get much hunt time my old stomping grounds. I probably had 40 minutes or so of hunting and managed 2 wheaties in that time.
Sunday I was back home and decided to try a town between nearby that I never thought about because it is so small. I was driving through the little town and saw an old baseball diamond so I decided to stop and check it out.
I made one pass with the bigger coil and found a wheatie...but also found it was a very trashy site and I was getting too many signals under the coil at the same time. PERFECT place for me to try out my new 6" Excelerator coil! GOLDDIGGER used one when we hunted Forest Park a feeks ago and liked it...so I wanted to try one myself. I popped it on and was amazed at the different sound a smaller coil makes. I have gotten accustomed to how larger coils sound and the ground they cover so it's been a while for me and a small coil. It took a few minutes to get used to the fact that I was covering less ground...but man did the coins come! This little coil hits coins HARD...and they sound SWEET when they hit! It's also VERY DEEP for a small coil because I was able to run it VERY HOT with little or no falsing whatsoever. I ended up running Semi Auto sensitivity maxed at 32 and my gain maxed as well. All the coins I found were anywhere from 4" to over 7" deep. The 2 mercs and Barber dime were all 3 right at 7" to 8" deep (Barber was 8"). Many of the Wheaties were 6" to 7" and some were almost 8".
After 7 hours...and MANY drink breaks...here's the take for Sunday: 1 Sterling Silver Heart Earring....13 Wheaties...1 1905 Indian Head....3 Silver Roosevelt dimes....2 Mercs (1 of them 1929D)...1 1914D Barber dime....and one 1941 Silver Washington Quarter. I wish I could find a Barber dime other than 1914's...but a Barber is a Barber. 3 of the last four Barber dimes I have found are 1914D's??? Hey...I'm not complainin'!
Happy Hunting and good luck.

I have an excelerator 5 inch coil but i have not got a coin past 4 inches with it ever- On a buried coin test garden coin i can barely get 4 inches. Maybe the 6 inch coil goes a little deeper!

I have to say those are some sweet finds. My son came home from Iraq and is home so I am delayed from hunting for a while.Glad to see you finding silver again. That token looks like a tax token,I have found a few.Good luck on your next trip out.

coins for me. I like the sound and just simply "plain as day" clear hits it made. I am used to covering much more ground with the 12.5" coil and am getting pretty good at distuinguishing deepies when there is more than one target under to coil. With the larger coil I am learning the "sweet" spot they have and haven't used the smaller coil for a while. It was a shock to say the least to hear such a crisp, solid high multi tone sound over pennies and silver that this 6" coil gave. It's honestly going to stay on unless the site is a pretty large one...then the 12.5 will go on. It should make for a nice one...two punch.
I ran the gain at 10 so all the deepies sounded as clear as clear gets. I only had one target break up badly and that was the corroded indian head. The worn thin Barber broke up a little...but when the sound came through...it was very nice and obvious enough to dig. I really think if there were much deeper targets there...this little coil would have found them or at least sound off enough for me to investigate.
Take care Tony and good luck hunting

Cool! I just got my 6" coil and haven't even strapped it on for a maiden hunt yet. I hope to do so soon though. So have you used the 5" round prior to this? Is it much better? My guess is that it could be run "hotter" and probably pinpoint better.

GREAT finds Brian JUST KIDDING!!!!! I have probably hunted that park before with RIC!!!!Got to LOVE THAT smaller coil! Speaking of coils did you ever get the other one from J.W.?????? Let me know!!!
Congrats again and GLAD you like SEMI-AUTO again!!!Keep up the GOOD finds! GLAD YOU CAME TO ST.LOUIS NOW????? H.H (GOLDDIGGER)J.W.

this 6" better than my 4.5 x 7. Maybe it better suits my style of hunting as I can run the gain maxed and sensitivity way up there too. I do love the 4.5 x 7 because I could run it hot but I can run this 6" even hotter here in my soil. Even in my test garden the 6" coil just screams over my 8" silver dime loud and clear from all directions. My 12.5 Excelerator will nail it too as will my 10 x 14...like they should...but there's a piece of junk buried about 4" from the sweet spot. Both the bigger coils will give a solid hit from 2 or 3 angles and say definately DIG...but the 6" just simply screams from any and all directions for me. Don't get me wrong...the 4.5 x 7 would hit it from many angles too when I had the gain and sensitivity jacked...but the 6" nails it from all angles with a nice high multi flute sound.
If you liked the 4.5 x 7 coil...I think you'll definately like this one too. They're both great coils.

what GOLDDIGGER said...not too far fromn where I found my gold ring. That is one NICE quarter. I need to try and head your way sometime in the next month or so. If I do...I'll slip you a PM.

we'll have to get together for a hunt. I'm trying to find some new sites...but my time is limited with work. I'm pretty much on call with the YMCA to take fitness appointments. Enjoy the time with your son...your detectin' can wait.

"The Patriot Shoe". I found it 9" down about 10 feet away from the Barber dime. Not sure what it was for...maybe an advertising item?

I'm going to come to St.Louis again and pluck some more silver out of your parks! I saw your post and it gave me a good laugh last night after a long day. I'm liking semi auto a lot as it lets me tell the difference between deep iron hits/coins a little better. It also lets me run the detector hotter. I'm glad I got to see the 6" coil in action on your explorer that day...because it made me want to try one. MAN I'm glad I did! Again....thanks for all your tips and info. I'll see you in a few weeks at the club get together..if not before.

Yeah, it was in the same general area where you guys were all pullin' seated coins a couple of weeks ago. Getting the quarter made it worth the wait for me. . .

Come anytime man. You can get my cell # from Golddigger. That's probably a better way to get in touch with me.

I bought a 5 inch detech excelerator a couple of years ago , i have to say i have not found the depth to be good - infact its bad on depth and i never seemed to find much with it. Now i am reading posts about the new 6 inch coil and wondering if their is any decent difference in performance. Has any guy's here compared results from both coils as i may consider buying this new 6 inch coil later this year.
