6x8 SEF Coil

crow-duck

New member
Well today I go to hunt with the 6x8 SEF coil. Took it to a fairgrounds where their was a lot of trash and nails. My first target was a wheat and down about 5" to 6 " it locked on. The second was a one way signal and when I dug it their was a nail about 2" from the wheat at the same depth as the wheat .The rosie was the same as the last wheat it had a nail in the hole close to the rosie. I want to give you my thoughts on the coil .Their are a lot of things I liked about it and some I didn't like about it.The things I liked about it was that it will find coins in trash ,But you have to go slow and listen to all of the targets. After detecting with the 6" and going over the same area with the 6x8 and finding what I found today I think this coil is a winner. The things I didn't like about it was it was a little unbalanced and a little on the heavy side compared to the 6" It is made like the 10x12 and all of the holes got stuck on twigs and tall grass. But if you want to find coins in trash This would be my choice. I hope this help everyone. This is what I found and thanks for looking !!!!

Thanks Crow-Duck!!
Any coil that finds those goodies in the trash is a winner!!!!! Thanks for sharing,,, I am guessing that by your name,, You are crow and a duck hunter as well???? I do a little crow hunting myself... What call, do you use??? I picked up a fox pro last year,,, That thing is on fire!!!

Well to be honest We were out drinking and some one was drunk and called me crow duck and the name kinda stuck !!!!

HAHA you should have lied :rage:, It's all good!

Check out Kelly Co website, you can see the pictures on their site.

I had my 6 x 8 SEF out today. I took it to a lot with moderate trash that I have been over about 5 times with my pro coil. On this small lot I have found about 30 wheats and 5 rosies. I did not find a thing with the 6 x 8. So, I went to a new spot that I haven't cleaned out that also has moderate trash and some EMI. It did well pulling several wheats, 1 merc, and 1 indian. My deepest coin was down 7". I need to go to one of my high trash sites and see how it does.

I noticed that I can't crank up my sensitivity like I could with the 6" coil. The best I can usually do is 2-4 units higher than my pro coil. I ran my pro coil in manual at 20 on my previous visit to this site. I had to keep the 6 x 8 SEF at between 22 and 24. Even at this sensitivity, the coil gets good depth.

what you didn't like as well...and I'm glad you did just that. I never noticed the heaviness because I've been swingin' the 10 x 12...so I actually liked the weight of the 6 x 8:clapping:
The parks I hunted when I did the field test were all pretty mowed up..so there was no stubble for it to get hung up on. That can be a real pain in the arss though...and it happens when I'm using the 10 x 12. It gets heavy...and old...real fast...when you get hung up on everything...and wears you out in a hurry.
I'm glad you noticed the same good points as I did too...and were able to pick some goodies in the trash. I feel the same as you do....I think it's a winner.
I might look into making a thin/solid cover for it...so it will then glide accross the ground like the 6" Excelerator does. If you happen to beat me to that task like we discussed....please make me one too:biggrin:
Take care bro...and good post:thumbup:

Thanks Bryce, I thought more would be interested in it ,But looks like they are not so that leaves more silver for us to find !!!!!! HA HA

Thanks Crow Duck and Bryce-L, I been waiting for a real evaluation of this coil from real people down in the trenches. I have a SEF 10x12 which is great and a 5" round excellerator. The "Biscuit" as I call it is good but it takes FOREVER to cover ground due to the small size, and I am a Patient guy! Hoping that the small SEF would have the qualities of it's big brother and a good size for trashy sites. The more people that have been on a site I hunt means more finds,of course the trash ratio goes up right along with that. I can think of several places I hunt the small SEF would stay on all day.I don't have to deal with ground stubble here. As for the weight, when I got the 10x12 I actually did some exercises to stretch the shoulder muscles. I know that sounds wacko but the muscles used while swinging a detector is not a usual move and it helped, no sore shoulder! I'm going to cash in the clads and order the 6x8!
Thanks again

Anytime you find a keeper in heavy trash with a new coil, it means it's a winner. I also don't like it when the coil gets caught on twigs and other things. The Pro Coil does this and I wish Minelab or someone would make a solid coil cover for this coil and even the S.E.F. coils so this wouldn't happen. Sure would be less of a struggle in some areas. Congrats on the finds and hope many more fall under your new coil. Good Luck and HH.:detecting:

Thanks James, I only went for a few hours. The wind was blowing 30 MPR and was 35% so I didn't stay long. I have a old fair grounds I want to try it at that has older coins in it. Have a Good one and Good luck on your next hunt !!!

Thanks Budddysox, I just post as is and don't beat around the bush.Have a Good one and Good luck on your next hunt !!!
