6X8 SEF Question - Is the cable wound up tight like the stock?

I just received a Detech 6X8 SEF coil. The cable part is not wound tight (spring like) like the stock coil and it's near impossible to fit it in through the tube because of it. I can probably try twisting it but this will be a nightmare to do when I want to switch coils and won't be good for the cable either. It didn't come in a box so I'm not sure it wasn't on a machine that had the rod extended and perhaps that wore out the spring like cable? It looks new otherwise.

Please see attached pic. The stock cable is pictured just above my 6X8 coil. Hope that makes it easier to understand. It is just a little to wide to fit inside the detector stem (without twisting hard).

Thanks,
Albert

Mine is close to the same way. And yes I had a pretty hard time getting mine to go into the rod too. I use the sunray probe so I run the cable on the outside now. You could always get a second lower rod that way you can leave the cable in there at all times.

Thanks Bill for the quick reply. I noticed in some Kellyco pics that they are wound tight but wasn't sure. I wanted another lower rod anyway and now don't have a choice!

Good hunting,
Albert

I agree, the dang thing is near impossible to thread through on its own. What I do is attach a piece of twine to the end of the coil cable and tie a washer or steel nut to the other end. The nut slips down the rod, and I grab it to pull the coil cable on through.

One of my SEF coils is the same way:ranting:. Even with an extra lower rod it still takes a bit of effort to get it to go in the upper rod while afield.

FYI to those maybe purchasing a 6X8 SEF. Apparently both exist (tight and loose). I just contacted a dealer and they guaranteed it would be a tight wrap and easily fit inside the handle.

Since Winter is here and I just ordered the coil, I'll just send it back and buy it from another seller if I decide to.

Mine was the same way and it made me not want to use it. So I ordered a complete extra shaft, top and bottom, now switching takes 5 seconds!

Mine is tightly coiled and is hard to thread down the shaft. The coil wire on the SEF is slightly larger which causes the problem.I do like ironman use a sinker and 100 lb. test mono. I take the lower shaft off and thread it first as it is the smaller of the 2 shafts. I stretch the coiled part out so it will go down the shaft easier.
