6X8 SEF & X-8

D&P-OR

Well-known member
Has anyone done "side by side" testing on these two coils? (Sunray X-8 and 6X8 SEF)----If so, what's the results (depth, seperation, etc.)?----What's the pros & cons of these two coils?--------Del

I tried the 6x8 last fall several times and never found the oldies at any depth. In my test bed the 6x8 was fine on seperation but totally lacked the depth. The 8 X nails everything there. I've only had the 8X a couple weeks but the green injuns, wheaties and silver has shown up on a regular basis. Time will tell but I think I bought the right coil for my conditions. Just my opinion. Jim

I just got the 6X8 yesterday and put it on the E Trac last night. I'll be hunting with it today and tomorrow. I've had the X8 for about 6 months and it is a superb coil and does a wonderful job for me, my favorite of all BTW. Deepest coin about 8" or so, but my coins around here are not very deep anyway. I'll do some side by side in the next week or so.

I have had both coils. I think the 6x8 seperates a tad better than the x8. But the x8 blows it away on depth! One time I dug a barber dime at 10'' wih the the x8! It was very soft and weak but repeatable. The deepest silver dime I dug with the 6x8 was 7''. But the 6x8 is better in super heavy trash which I don't hunt much.

Thanks for your responses guys.----I think I'm gonna be looking in on getting an X-8.--------Del

The 6x8 is a 6" coil correct?

Six inches wide and eight inches long. I've done my last 3 hunts with the one I got last week and well it is a keeper in my soil. Light and very clear and crisp sounding. I dug a coin yesterday right at nine inches with it. Here's the cool thing about it just like with the X8 and the X5 coil. It is small enought the E Trac in auto will see less ground clutter and less mineralization and most of the day at +3 sensitivity it was running wide open at 30 in auto. I picked up a shot and mushroomed civil war 50 or so caliber slug "REALLY" deep, That's all I'll say on that, the naysayers will come out:minelab::clapping:

To figure out the size of a coil like that you just add 6+8=14 /2= 7inch approximate coil. That explains why the 6x8 gets better separation and the 8" gets better depth, its an inch bigger.

What i would like to know. If you take a ruler and measure just the center strip "not including the butterflies" just the center strip. How long is it? This question is not to argue anything. I'm just trying to get the dimensions in my head.

Hey EZ...just post a picture of you head and someone will post a picture of the coil, then we'll overlay the two.....:poke::laugh:

I love my 6x8. I've found 2 silvers in 2 days (including a 1904 barber dime) at a super trashy park that I never thought I could pull anything from. It's a winner for me.

Shameless bump. Can someone put a tape/ruler to there SEF coil and measure the center ?

6 5/8 at it's widest. 8 1/8 at it's longest. 7 inches down the center bar. HH Randy

HEY RANDY---How ya doin??----Been missing your posts lately--hope everythings OK with you.----Have you tested these two coils? -------Del

Been a long winter around here Del. Finally got the snow melted off and just a matter of feeling well enough to get out detecting. As to comparing these two coils, yes I have. Actually, I compared the X-8 to both the 6X8 and the 6-inch Excelerator. Briefly, I find the target separation and detection depth of the X-8 and 6X8 to be nearly identical at the sites I hunt. The 6-inch Excelerator isn't as deep. But it seems to be a bit more sensitive to small jewelry. And the target separation is the best of the three. I ain't saying that will be true for everyone at all locations. I'm just saying that these are my findings, hunting the places I hunt. JMHO HH Randy
