705 TID Questions

I am pretty new to the 705 after trying out a few other machines. I am making friends with the 705 and am gearing up for nugget prospecting. After building a TID garden (to my wife's great amusement) I am pretty confident on the sounds and most of the corresponding TIDs. I have made another nugget garden using lead of approx 1 and 2 gram bits buried in marked graves at 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 inches. Using the the 10. 5 coil in prospecting mode the 705 is good for all the 2 gram bits and the can get the 1 grammers up to 10 inches. My question is why does the TID change from ground to 2, 4 and 6 inches ( cannot register in coin mode after this)?

From the wealth of knowledge read here I would still dig all these beeps but the changing TIDs are a bit of a mystery.

Also any other good training exercises to do for nugget hunting?

Cheers- Ratatoui

Target depth will affect the ID. Try using some 7 1/2 shot to simulate the smaller pickers. When you can get those consistently, then you're ready to go nugget shooting. At least that's what I've read over the years...

So some of you that have had some success with nugget detecting don't seem to worry much about TID? Is this correct?

Possibly just dig for all the positive sounds and ignore the grunts?

I am persisting with No discrim to work with sound, but I do like to check the TID if no too deep for the coin mode.

Not so much into filling my bag with iron junk but don't want to miss the small bits of gold either!

I usually hunt gold jewelry so its a little different, but gold just ID like trash with a purer sound... sometimes! One of the best rings I found had a horrible tone it was white gold with 3 crisscrossing ribbons with 52 diamonds, encrusted with sand and gunk and I only dug it because I had not hit anything for so long I wanted to take a dig break! Gold has a wide ID range and varied alloys even in nature make it more difficult. I believe you will find the successful hunters are looking for places where trash is closest to nonexistent for that reason. Gold is where you find it, some places are just better than others (how is that for profound!).
