705 VS. 505?

I was wondering if there is any real difference in depth and other features between these two models? Thanks.

The reason I bought the 705, besides getting a killer deal on it, was because of the auto ground balance and tracking. Before getting the deal, I had already set my mind to find a 705;
As far as depth goes, really couldnt tell you if one is deeper than the other.

Of the two I chose the 705 primarily because of the backlight. I do a lot of my hunting during low light hours.
Probably not the technical answer you were expecting! Lol
But that's what made the difference for me.

IF you were able to adjust the 505 with the accuracy that the 705 is capable of adjusting itself or by being adjusted, I'd say there is little difference in depth of detection. Especially now that they both accept all frequencies of coils. However, having Auto NC, Automatic Ground balance, Tracking, Tracking ground balance offset, Prospecting mode and the ability to chose a "more refined" Sensitivity setting, the 705 has the potential of being the deeper detector. I like the 505's ability to provide a -9 on the most ferrous targets, compared to -8 on the 705. (allows for more defined audio on deeply buried iron). But I like the 2-digit notch system implemented by the 705 (compared to the 3-digit offered by the 505). Based strictly on depth..........my choice is the 705 because it allows us to address ground and noise issues with more precision. These issues can both be detrimental to maximizing depth, when not properly adjusted. If you get real good with the 505, and there are some folks on this forum that I would consider real good, you might not see enough difference in depth to justify the difference in price. Only you can make that determination. JMHO HH Randy

Great response Digger. that' kinda what I was thinking. Without trying both, I assumed that the 705 would be easier to get a more consistent depth due to the added adjustability and GB tracking, etc.

I've personally owned the 305, 505, and 705 and I believe there is no difference in depth when in Coin Mode. However, I do believe the 705's prospecting mode offers greater depth (a feature not offered on the 505). I find I use the prospecting mode often when I am Coin/Relic hunting. My learning curve on X-Terra went from 305 to 505 to 705, and I believe the easiest X-Terra to use is the 705 even though it offers the most features. This is due to the auto noise cancel and auto GB/GB TRACKING that are not options on the 305 & 505.

There is a Minelab "X-Terra Series Detectors' Comparison Chart" available that shows the various features of each X-Terra model.

Here is a thread that futher discusses the 705's prospecting mode: http://www.findmall.com/read.php?55,1926398

Hope this helps.
