8 hours in surgery observations today....

this is copied from an email I sent lorraine today, we stay in close contact, she is very interested in my schooling, she was a nurse before she was a music teacher:

spent 8 hours in the OR, I watched 6 surgeries today, 3 were scopes, (abdominal hernia, appendix removal, and not sure about other one)
another surgery was cleaning out a woman's nasal cavities, and last was a total knee replacement, the knee was pretty gross, I had to keep looking away made me sick to watch it. They hammered, drilled, chisled and cut on that poor little ladies knee I felt like they were working on a car!

I am SO sore, my lower back hurts so bad from standing all day, I need better shoes

as far as the doctors.........2 were very young, good mannered, really ornery. All Surgeons but one were real polite with me. I had one female surgeon and she did not speak to me, totally ignored me, did not even look at me.

The others were very nice, asked me questions, my name, where I was from, where I used to work etc....most invited me to come close to get a better look, I was about 2 feet from the action.

Most nurses were nice, one older lady was kinda grumpy, all the scrub techs were real polite and answered all my questions.

If I watched them doing surgery I would pass out on the floor. I watched them doing plastic surgery on tv once and it hurt me to watch it.

as for me I can't even stand to watch anything 'surgical' on those educational channels. Personally, I think God put skin on people so they wouldn't freak looking at what's underneath it.

When my cousin in Kansas was viewing the operation in the OR she passed out from looking at all the blood....they sent her home for two weeks to recover, because they said most of them do faint, for it isn't a pretty sight! I don't think I could have ever been a doctor or a nurse! I've always had a weak stomach, but it isn't as weak as it used to be! Good luck in passing the courses and God Bless! Betty

sounds cool to me! I only scrubbed in on 4 C-sections! Took pics of two and did video of two! :)

Keep at it Terry. You are going to do great. That was one of the hardest classes I had when I went through police training back in the '80's. Only our class was an autopsy class. I can handle that better than watching someone get cut on.

Sounds VERY cool to me! I would love it!
