9x12 or 10x14 ace 250

Which would be a better deal? I can buy a 9x12 and a 4,5 for about the same price as a 10x14 what would you do ?

10"x14"=better depth and a wider swadth at depth as well, being a double "D" search coil.
Best of luck to ya whichever coil you decde to get.:biggrin:Happy Hunting!:)

9X12 and 4.5. Once you use the 4.5 you'll keep using it. May as well get it now or you will end up getting it later. HH JackinAustin

If I had to choose (and a tough one at that) I would go with the sniper. It can do things that the other two can't do, and that is get close to metal objects.

I went for the 10" x 14" since I go to the ocean beach yearly. It goes deeper, It pin points better and you cover a lot of ground fast.
I did get it when it was selling for $99.00. If I had to do it over and I had to pay the $149.00 I'd do it again.
Pin pointing you sweep back and forth and when you get your high point. Just drag back and when tone drops off there it is at the tip of your coil. Every time !
Good luck on your choice...

Happy Hunting

Go for the 9x12 and 4.5 and double your pleasure. Unless you're hunting the wet salt sand at a beach or in highly minerlized areas there is no need for the DD.

I put a 9x12 on last season and never took it off. Some day I'll grab a sniper.

Myself, I'd get the 9x12 and use the extra $$ for the 4.5 sniper. That would give you
the best bang for the bucks. The 10x14 might go a tad deeper than the 9x12,
but it's not going to be by much. Maybe an inch or so at the most.
The sniper is a great coil, "I almost consider it a "must have" for the average
hunter", so if you can get the 9x12 and the sniper for the price of the 10x14,
I'd go that route. The 9x12 is a good coil and I suspect it probably goes almost
as deep as the 10x14. I've never tried the 10x14 though, and I still have not seen
a good careful comparison between the two by someone that has both of those.
I do know it's regular price is pretty high vs the 9x12.. :( And it's not made by Garrett.

If you're in an area with a lot of mineralization, you'll want the 10x14 Excelerator coil for your Ace. It still beeps when it shouldn't, but it does go an inch or two deeper. My 2500 will go about as deep with the 9.5 inch, and maybe another inch or two with the 12.5 inch. The problem with all of these large coils, is weight. They're tiring, even when using a support strap (Swingy-Thingy?). There is no free lunch!

I bought the 10 x 14 last summer and never took it off. You can cover a lot more ground in a day, so the finds go up. Well worth having.

The 10x14 was the right choice for beach hunting and other places where trash isn't too heavy.

Both the Garrett 250 and Tesoro Silver uMax will challenge any VLF machine when fitted with the 10x14 (Ace) or 12x10 (Tesoro) coils. People are basically throwing their money away on those mega expensive machines.

Buy the 9" x 12" and the 4.5" and enjoy the diversity of both coils. Question: When considering the 10" x 14" coil, how strong are your arms & shourlders? In other words, how long do you want to swing that thing before you're completely pooped?! The Ace 250 with it's stock coil is nose heavy as it is and, if you don't think so, grab onto a Minelab X-Terra 305 or 505 and see for yourself. The difference is unbelievable! I hunted with the Ace 250 for a long time before upgrading to the GTP 1350 and it didn't take long before my arm and shoulder began to hurt like the dickens! I traded the GTP 1350 for the Minelab X-Terra 70 and I've been a happy camper ever since. Oh...by the way...I find a lot more stuff in the ground with the X-70 than I ever did with the Ace 250 or the GTP 1350. For what it's worth to those willing to listen to a second opinion.

I'm sure that everything you said is quite true Alan, but I will add one personal observation. I remember initially installing my 9x12 and thinking that it felt like a cement encrusted tennis racket head flopping around down there. However, after a few weeks of use it normalized for me, and It now feels perfectly natural. I do not find it fatiguing at all. But your experience is worth noting and we are not all built the same.
