Hit an old park today that has been in use since the lake was created as a water source. (1870's). Used a pattern that I made up for silver, nickels and maybe the odd $5 gold piece. Suspect this area has been cherry picked for shallow silver/clad in the past. Found the usual clad, a wheat penny (1918S) and a silver military emblem that says "RIFLE" on it. (3/16" X 1"). Looks like an add-on to some other award.
Tabs were located around the 4" level and the wheat was at 6" or 7" level. Clad coins came in at the tab level. Tabs were the newer type and I'm thinking the 1962 level is somewhere between 4" and 6".
Next time I'll hunt with a more open setup, so I can get a better idea of how much ferrous and non-ferrous junk there is. Only stuff I'll be digging under 7" will be if the signal is solid AND if the numbers are what I'm looking for.
Ground is soft and moist for a change, which made for an enjoyable outing. Can't wait to get my Sunray probe as it helps me resolve those situations where the target disappears after digging. Also makes recovery quick with minimum disturbance of the soil.
Auto +3 was cycling in the low 20"s. Very stable. HH
