A brain teaser for all you beeper swingers and coin experts. Who or what is on the face of an Indian Head penny?

isn't it suspose to depict Lady Liberty in a head dress...

rumor has it that the designer of the indian head used a likeness of his daughter for the face of the indian on the obverse. this fact has never been proven to be true though. it is supposed to represent lady liberty with feathers in her hair. i guess.

Yeah, it's Lady Liberty. Great trivia though, Uncle Willy. Shoot some more at us. I had never heard that story about the artist modelling it after his daughter. That is quite interesting. Thanks. Happy Hunting.:)

G/Day Uncle Willy,
The indian head penny face was a native American chief based on the profiles of
John Tree, Iron Tail and Two Moons.

Say what?!:surprised::yikes::)

Liberty, like all our circulating coins until Lincoln in 1909.

I thought that was the buffalo nickel indian's story. Maybe I should walk my happy a$$ to my study and look it up. I know the answer is in the whitman's flying eagle and indian head penny book but that would be cheating...

Duh yerr I tink yez mite be rite Cupajo, That was the nickel (Buffalo).
Wot mi book sez is:

"The Indian head Penny, as it is commonly known, inspired the changes made to the Nickel In 1913, when pitorial motifs were used for both sides. James Earle Fraser produced the head of a native American chief based on the profiles of John Tee,Iron Tail and Two Moon, but the "buffalo" on the reverse (which gives this coin its nickname) was actually Black Diamond the American bison in the New York Zoo"

I will just go back to sleep now.:confused:
