...take a look at this google search (below) for "crown over GR". Some interesting stuff comes up, antique furniture, damascus pistols, lockplates and such....

The cover was attached above the keyhole, it would swing out to insert the key then swing back to keep the wind and rain out of the lock.
I always found them really neat and it is just like finding a coin to me.
 
Nice keyhole plates.Those are marks (GR,VR) signify crown property.Georgius Rex and/or Victoria Regina respectively.The second relic I ever found was a government crown lock for a local post office that dated to 1874-1878.Never heard of the W. W. Mfg Co.
