The first first was a mosquito. Little MFers. Still a few patches of frozen ground and already the creatures are out and about making life miserable.
Second first was this year's first seated coin. 1876 dime. I was doing some boulevards in the neighborhood. Absoulutely textbook silver hit; I was expecting roosie or merc and got sloppy with the digging and ric'd it. Oops, especially cause it is the best I've ever dug. The picture does not do it justice but can actually see hairlines in the head. have others with just as good detail in the shield area but think this is just a better mint strike. Believe this one could go AU. Found three 1876 dimes last year. 1853,1876, and 1891 are the big mintage years and find way too many of them.
It has been a weird spring. Checked my records and last year by this time had nine seated coins. Find that getting out before the grass starts to grow is when you can really scrub the ground in those hunted out areas with a small coil and get between the trash and still get deep. This year we are going from frozen ground to grass already green and growing in a very short span. Seems to me that the small coils suffer more from the air gap in mineralized soils. The stock and WOT seem to do better with an air space and I will hit less trashy sites with them later.
And.. Off to a good start with nickels this year. More Vs and buffalos than silver dimes. After seeing Keith post his totals from the field have reason to believe that there are many more old nickels to be found. They sure are much harder to dig; much more of a gut feeling. Think that Golddigger is the only one that I know of who finds many of them in trashier areas. Someday hope to do as well as he does.
