A couple of Goodies this weekend. Part 1.

This weekend I found a couple of goodies. Last weekend I ran across 1 lone Church out in the middle of no-where and about 4 or so miles away I ran into another Church on a corner but across the gravel road was a large Schoolhouse. Well, I didn't get a chance this weekend to go and try them but I plan on it if I have enough time this year if the weather holds up for a bit. Anyways, this weekend I come across 2 more Schools out in the country and an old Church with a Huge Yard. This Church was built in 1885 so I hope there is some finds there from that period of time. I didn't detect it yet since it was Sunday when I come across it so maybe next weekend I will hit some of these new spots and see if there is anything for me to find. I also found an old Town Hall and I stopped for a bit and tried it out. I noticed someone else was there about a good month ago or so since there was old plugs that had grown back but still noticeable but that didn't stop me from finding 3 Wheat's, 2 Indians, 1 Buffalo Nickel, and a Token. And to think this previous person had left me a Wheatie in one of his plugs. Thanks who ever you may be!:biggrin: I could almost bet it is the same person that left me a Silver Quarter in a plug last weekend also. If it is, thanks again!:bouncy: Ok, now for what I found this past weekend. I did OK but wish I had found more finds, but then again, don't we all? I found 5 Silver this time. They consisted of 1 Barber Dime dated 1914 with full Liberty, and 4 Mercury Dimes dated 1916(Dang, no D),1918(with full bands on back),1920, and a 1943. Funny thing about the Dimes is that I found the 14 first, then the 20, then the 18, and then the 16 and finally broke the 2 year's apart strategy with the 43 Merc. And the funny thing was that I was thinking that all I needed was a 1916 Merc to finish what I had started and it came true. Just totally wierd!!! I also found a neat Token that came from the Town Hall and which was the first target I dug at this spot within a minute or so of being there. The front says PONTIAC Chief Of The Sixes and on the back it says Product Of General Motors with I believe the town it was made at in very small letters on the very bottom. Too bad it is hard to read. I also found 3 Nickels. 1 Buffalo Nickel dated 1936-d and 2 Jefferson Nickels dated 1947 and 1959-d. My other finds will be added below this post so keep your eyes peeled. I will post them as soon as I get done scanning them. Here is my other finds from this past weekend. I found 5 Indian Heads. I nailed one pretty good due to it being in a bunch of tree roots and sitting at an angle, but I am just glad it was a common one. But it still hurts when something like that happens to a nice piece of History. I also hit a Wheatie but it was a well worn one so no big deal. The dates on the Indians are 1879(found this one along with the 1890 at the Town Hall),1890,1901,1903, and the one I scalped, 1905. I found 18 Wheat's dated 1917-s,1924,1925,1925-d,1927-s1928,1929-d,1932-d,(2)1940-d,1942-d,(2)1944-d,1946,(2)1946-d,1946-s, and 1948-d. I also found a few Misc. Items. They include a Toy Car missing the wheels, 1 Car Key, 1 Post Office Box Key, 1 Railroad Nail with the number 37 on it, and part of a Keystone Padlock. I also recovered some Clad Coinage which consisted of 9 Quarters, 16 Dimes, 1 Nickel, and 42 Pennies. [attachment 39866 IndianHeads.jpg][attachment 39867 Wheats.jpg][attachment 39868 Misc..jpg]
 
it has real character! I like the color, the patina, the bent head. It has a lot of character!
Of course I'm just pulling your leg. Nice finds!
 
I kind of thought it was an old Railroad Nail or something like that since the Railroad had old Lead Seals that were numbered as well. I intend to get back to the neck of the woods where I found some of the finds this weekend and I just hope I find a few nice Barber or maybe even a Seated before the ground decides to freeze up. if you keep finding old coins like you are and in quantity, then there might be a :starwars: to be fought. :rofl::bouncy: It sure is work for me to go out and keep making these kinds of finds every weekend but I am motivated enough to keep plugging at it till the ground freezes like Concrete, then I will have to hang it up until spring. The good part of this is that I can do more research and find more possible spots to get permission to detect and to take a breather. It's tougher than one can imagine and the only one that knows that is Rick(ND) and maybe a few of the Club Members that live around in the area. Most of the Parks and such have been picked over and it takes a long time to get finds like I do. I have to travel around a bit so I can find new ground to hunt at just to have a chance at finding some nice Silver. Your spots will yeild finds for many years to come MrChile but the spots I detect will keep drying up and get even harder to find old coins and such as time passes on. So cherish all the finds you make like I am and I wish you continued success and HH for years to come. :thumbup:
 
If you don't know already, there is an acid called Nic-A-Date that will bring back the date's of worn Nickels. It takes a couple applications but it is worth finding out what the date is and how old the coin is. But it sure is nice to find Buffalo Nickels with the date on them. Good Luck and HH.:thumbup:
 
Great finds James. Can you can keep that silver gap going into the 1800's? LOL All joking a side, I think you finding some great finds and your doing it the right way By doing the research. Thats all we can do when the ground freezes up here in the north in the winter time. Good luck with your next trip.

It's great when you can throw in some IH's. Also the Barber is Sweet.

How do you clean your wheat pennies. I sometimes use amonia but wondering if this is too harsh as some get a greenish tone to them.

Nothing better to do than research more possible sites for the upcoming year during the winter months. I wish I could land just a few more Seated this year but those are hard to find up here in North Dakota. Good Luck and HH.
 
The first is Peroxide. I take and warm it up in the microwave and then I just drop the coins in and the Peroxide boils the dirt and crud off of the coins. I also use a fine bristled Brass Brush that works great without scratching the coins or doing any other kind of harm to them. It just depends where the coins were found and the type of ground they were in on the results. So give one of these a try and see what you think. I just love finding those old Barbers and Indians and it is always a good day when you bag one in your pouch. Good Luck and HH.
