Hey Gila, do you ever run into any rattelers out there where your hunting? I havn't while I was hunting, but I did when I let my dog out to run around one time right near some modern buildings, but next to a canyon. I almost ran ito it myslf. I grabbed the dog, literally, picked her up and carried her to the car, cause I was scared she'd try and check it out too close. Marc.
Hi...I've run into a few, but not nearly as many as most people would think. One made me do a world's record "sitting broad jump" once. I usually just let them go their way, and I go mine. Sidewinders are nasty little critters though, but they're kinda rare around here.
Hey, I've been poring over the Sanborn maps and Google Earth...and I've located a few interesting-looking places here, dating from pre-1900's. I went to check out one by eyesight...it is kinda trashy but looks like it's relatively untouched. Of course, you can't tell by looking! I've gotta talk with the guy again about the Mexico thing. Let me know if you're still interested for sometime in January.
The Snowbirds are here full-force now, and some have some pretty sophisticated equipment! I haven't seen one yet that looks like any competition though. Three were in one of the parks Saturday going like a "bat out of heck" looking like they were swinging weed-whackers, their coils rising about two feet at the end of each swing and not coming closer than about six or eight inches to the ground on the downstroke. If they found anything, it was IN SPITE of their technique!

That snake thing is very cool!! My guess would be a collar clip between two button holes. I have found a few of those in silver.

is it silver? I think it might be something that goes with a tie too. Either way, where ever you're finding the relics, keep going back Butch. Tell you a little trick I do. When I'm detecting a house site on the goldfields, I work a patch of about 3ft square. I take about an inch from the top of the soil, to one side, then very slowly sweep the detector covering the entire area, from all angles. If you only knew how many relics I've found this way, that would otherwise have missed by doing the general sweep. Taking that bit of a layer off makes all the difference. Especiall if you're working ground that has debris over it, and the detector is reading down far enough for the deeper targets. I've gone over the same ground using this method, and pulled out more relics this way. Try it. Then just replace the soil, throw the branches, twigs and leaves back over, and no one would know you've been there.

That sounds like a great idea!! I've raked the ground when looking for gold nuggets out in the hills, but it never occured to me to do the same looking for relics, etc.
Of course, instead of throwing back the branches, leaves & twigs....I'd have to throw back the sand, rocks & tarantulas!

Wow, Golden. That's slick. It makes sense, but what about using a bigger search coil? I know what your gonna say, and I believe your right: If you say: Using a bigger coil could go deeper but there's still the trash and the separation problem. I hope I'm learning something here, but if I'm not correct me, and I'll go away and pout for a while. I would think that's why you clear away the dirt and debree. You could still use the 8" coil and still go deep enough and have better separation. At any rate, that's a great tip. Never thought of that. Marc.

Hey, Gila, what about the Gilamonsters, or however you spell it. I know they live in Arizona, and they're nothing to mess around with. They could be almost as bad as the Funnell Web spiders down in Australia?:| Kidding, but I'm not kidding. I hear a bite from a Gila Monster is extremely painful. Marc, from San Diego. Yea, Gila, don't tell em about this forum or they'll get smart and steal all our loot. I'm still up for the get together in January. I'll give you a call or give me a call. Sounds like this map thing is really a great thing to find out info. I need to pursue that pretty soon. I'm trying to "bone up" for the ocasion, and my own local stuff, to try and make it more productive too, and stay away from those Gila Monsters, and rattlers. I even worry about the scorpions, but then, I'm a worry wort from a long time back. I'll be talking to you soon. Marc.
Actually, the scorpions are far more to worry about than the rattlers. And Gila Monsters? In all my zillion years in Arizona, I've seen a total of two outside a zoo. One was waddling across a street in Kingman, the other lived under the sample table in the mine. They are not agressive and only bite if you stick your hand close enough so they don't have to expend any energy to grab it!
Don't worry about those things! Good thing we're not going back east where they have Cottonmouths.....now THOSE are some nasty buggers!!

I only use the 7.5 inch coil I bought for the Quattro. I have to use the smaller coil, unlike when you're detecting for gold. I'm not sure what kind of ground you have there, on the gold fields, but I imagine it would be spacious, lots of dirt, not much undergrowth to push through. It's like that in places here, but other gold fileds are just pure think dense bush and undergrowth, and these are the places I mostly detect in. Also, these areas where prolific in the gold mining days, mines strewn all over the place, very interesting to explore, lots of hidden ruins and stuff like that. Anyone who loves exploring would have a ball here!

Yes its silver. That one came out of a local park. I try to stay out of the woods during hunting season. Sometimes if I have the time I'll clear areas when hunting cellar holes in the woods and your right it does help getting that surface debris out of the way.

Yea, I lived in Louisiana for a few months and they told me about some of the "fun" creatures they had down there, including crocodiles. I'm glad to hear the the "monsters", aren't to aggressive. I do hate the scorpions though, but I guess you just have to watch out, just like anything else.
