A detector for a newbie

I'm 38yrs old and I think I want to get started in detecting and finding treasure, starting in my back two acres. My wife doesn't want me to blow alot of money incase it's just a passing fancy.
So my question is what detector should I get if money is an issue (under a 100 bucks).

For under $100 radio shack cheapie is about all thats available. And save your money as if you don't have a decent unit several hundred dollars you won't stick with the hobby..

The cheapest I would want is around 300 new. Below that and detecting suffers.
Used sounds good. Used detectors are worth very little money so you can find one at low price. Local pawn shop perhaps, yard sales, flee markets, join a local club and ask if anyone has a used one they will sell ya, ebay, yahoo etc ... Detectors shops will want big bucks for the used ones. Most people who treasure hunt have a couple extra old ones. There are plenty of used ones around the sellers are just not motivated.

Most detector for under $100 are toys compared to the detector most talk about on these fourms If you want to raise it to $150 I am sure you can get a used Tesoro Compadre as many sell for $120 on the fourms and this detector will do well and easy to use.

You could look on ebay for a whites classic series.
There good solid performers to go with.
Have fun!

Well this is what I found: MICRONTA DISCOVERY II, I paid $44.44 for it and should be here by next wednesday. What do you think, good or bad. Since I'm new to this I value your guy'/gal's opinions.

You got a $44.44 toy that will find metal if it is not too deep or small like a coin. I think you will find a few newer coins if they are not deeper than 2 or 3 inches, but feel you may dig a lot of metal trash items. I hope you dont get too discourage with detecting with this detector as it will work, but you may not see some of the great finds you see posted on these fourms.
Good luck and if you decide to keep detecting check back with us on the fourms.

The best used low cost is a FISHER 1225, but cost more than $100;it is deep and works. take another perspective, go to schools, parks ,parking lots at yards, & sidewalks and every thing you find goes pay the overage above your better unit.plus any scrap iron , copper & aluminum brings on some bucks TO BUILD UP YOUR $
a FISHER 1235 OR 1236 CAN RUN $225 ,USED, AND UP AND IS DEEP

You can't at least get a better than average idea about whether you'd like to take detecting further by trying out a Bounty Hunter II (at the very least) or one of the new White's Prizm I or II.
You can check out the Prizms at www.whiteselectronics.com and the Bounty Hunter II is sold at a reduced price through Wal Mart where it's called the Pioneer 202. You can also get various model information and specs from the other detector brand web sites as well.
Any time you go for lower level detectors (read "cheap") you'll very likely get what you pay for and ONLY what you pay for. You probably won't be able to beach hunt or do very well in trashy or mineralized areas, but they'll often work well enough in school yards, parks and private lawns to give you a feel for things.
The other option open to you is to investigate all the base models and find out what YOU want out of a detector...
For example...Go to the various Brand's websites and see what models actually meet your needs or desires and then go to various Forum Classifieds (such as the one here in the Find Mall) or check out E-Bay until one shows up used.
I'd NEVER, EVER buy one from a Pawn Shop, though...but that's just me. <img src="/metal/html/biggrin.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":D">
